Africa is not one thing. It is hundreds, and most travellers see only a fraction of what's possible. Why do you want to go? It's the first question we ask, and the answer shapes everything. The journey that's right for you might be the wildlife, knowing exactly which conservancy and which quiet corner of the Serengeti to avoid the crowds.
Or it might be something you hadn't considered: the layered history of Johannesburg, Lamu's ancient Swahili coast, the wild Cape coastline where whales, sharks and penguins share the same cold water, or a village football game your children will talk about for years.

When is the best time to visit Africa?
Africa doesn't run on one calendar; it runs on many. It means that the "best time" isn't a single, straightforward answer.
- For a classic safari in East and Southern Africa, June through October is the dry season. The bush thins, wildlife congregates at water sources, and the Great Migration masses peak in July and August, and so do the crowds who follow them. November through March runs greener and quieter: lush landscapes, cobalt skies, and better value. Botswana's Okavango Delta transforms with the floodwaters that roll off Angola's highlands; February is an entirely different experience than July. In southern Africa, October offers standout wildlife viewing if you can stand the heat.
- Beyond safari, gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda runs year-round. Sitting near the equator, weather isn't the real constraint, permit scarcity and lodging availability in high season are. Cape Town runs on its own logic, opposite the safari calendar: December through March is prime beach-and-Winelands weather, while June through August turns cool, green, and windy. It's still beautiful, just a different trip. And if a beach finale in Mozambique, Seychelles, or Zanzibar is part of the plan, February and March carry real cyclone risk and are worth steering around. At the summer peak of safari, Egypt and Morocco are baking hot.
