Soulful and wild, Mozambique is the epitome of quiet, barefoot beach luxury

Why visit Mozambique?

Mozambique casts a beachy spell with its layered history and soul-stirring coastline. Portuguese influences mingle with African traditions in atmospheric towns where faded facades, island forts, and marimba rhythms hint at centuries of traders and explorers. Along the shore, life centers on the sea: grilled seafood, sailing dhows, deep-sea fishing, and reefs alive with color. Days are shaped by salt air and sunlight, whether you’re snorkeling offshore or simply swaying in a hammock. It’s a place to disconnect from routine and reconnect with simple pleasures, where each evening ends with a fiery horizon and the hush of the Indian Ocean.

Mozambique, your way

Your extraordinary journey to Mozambique will feel entirely your own. For honeymooners, that might mean a secluded island retreat with private, lanternlit beach dinners and dhow cruises at sunset.

Whether it’s a picnic on a remote sandbar, guided snorkeling, or time simply to exhale, each itinerary is tailored to your pace and priorities.

The EJ team went above and beyond. Abby and Amber were incredible, and their knowledge and attention to detail made our honeymoon so special. We could not have had a better time, it truly was the most incredible experience!

Is Mozambique the right destination for me?

Mozambique is an exceptional choice for travelers drawn to ocean adventures, abundant marine life, and sweeping stretches of shoreline. Scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing, sunset dhow cruises, kayaking, or simply unwinding by the water are among the most rewarding ways to experience its coast. Regions such as Ponta Mamoli, Inhambane, and the Quirimbas each offer their own distinct rhythm—inviting you to engage with the sea as actively or as leisurely as you wish.

What to expect on a private Mozambique tour

Every Extraordinary Journey is bespoke, deeply personal, and designed to uncover the unexpected beauty that makes a destination come alive

Memorable accommodations

Mozambique’s best stays are beach-forward and blissfully relaxed, ranging from polished resorts in the south to remote island lodges in the Quirimbas and Bazaruto archipelagos. Expect stylish design, excellent seafood, and a strong “toes in the sand” feel. A small number of eco-lodges are also taking shape in Gorongosa for travelers who want a simple, authentic bush extension.

Carefully considered wilderness

This is a destination defined by coastline, with thousands of kilometers of beaches, reefs, and islands and relatively low tourism density. Northern Mozambique feels especially remote and uncrowded, while the south offers easier access and a bit more polish. Inland, Gorongosa National Park is a conservation success story in progress: game is returning and habituating, and the safari experience is quiet and exploratory.

Extraordinary experiences

Every trip we design is bespoke, and we pride ourselves on giving you access to exclusive experiences tailored to the type of travel that resonates with you. We’ll tailor the pacing and activity level to you, balancing immersion with comfort throughout.

When is the best time to travel to Mozambique?

Depending whether you go to the north or the south, Mozambique can be a year-round destination. January through March/April are the hottest and wettest months and there is always a good chance of rain. But we wouldn’t rule these months out altogether, especially if you are staying as long as a week. It won’t likely ruin your Mozambique safari, but be prepared for rain.

If you are traveling to Mozambique specifically for the diving, we recommend going between July and October. The humpback whales migrate into the Mozambique waters during that time, so if you have your heart set of viewing these magnificent creatures, time your vacation accordingly.

In addition, the south (Bazaruto, Inhambane, Ponta Mamoli) can have heavy rainfall and even cyclones on certain parts of the coast between January and March. In the north (the Quirimbas, Ilha de Mozambique) the rainiest time of year is more closely aligned with the rains in East Africa, between March and May. Of course there is annual variation and in theory it could rain for a day or two at any time of year.

Where to go in Mozambique

Mozambique’s coast dazzles with world-class diving and spectacular marine wildlife, while Gorongosa offers an uncrowded safari experience.

Quirimbas Archipelago

Scattered like emeralds across the Indian Ocean, the Quirimbas Archipelago is a string of more than 25 coral islands off northern Mozambique, where time slows and nature takes center stage. Dubbed the “African Caribbean,” it offers powder-white beaches, translucent waters, and some of the world’s healthiest coral reefs, with dramatic drop-offs that thrill divers and snorkelers alike. Days unfold with deep-sea fishing, traditional dhow sailing, and unhurried island living—far from the crowds. From the barefoot luxury of Vamizi and Azura Quilalea to the historic charm of Ibo Island, the Quirimbas is an intimate, romantic escape with soul.
