Most travelers fly from Johannesburg to Beira, a flight of under two hours. Travelers not routing through Johannesburg can connect to Beira on Ethiopian Airlines via Addis Ababa. From Beira, a light aircraft reaches the park's Chitengo airstrip in about 35 minutes. Scheduled flights run on set days of the week, with private charters available on any day. A direct flight from Gorongosa to Vilanculos makes it easy to continue to the beaches of the Bazaruto Archipelago.

When to visit Gorongosa National Park

The best time to travel to Gorongosa is July to October. This is the dry season, when wildlife is at its most concentrated and conditions are at their most comfortable, especially for walking safaris, which hit their sweet spot in August and September. If you can tolerate the hot, dry heat of October, wildlife viewing is excellent. The park is open only from April to November.

April and May are Gorongosa's secret season, offering a different kind of safari. These are the only months with enough water on Lake Urema for canoeing and boating, and the only time to see pelicans and herons nesting in the lake's flooded fever trees, a highlight for birders.
