Gorongosa National Park – Bespoke Mozambique Itineraries

Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique is perhaps Africa’s greatest wildlife restoration story.

Ravaged by 15 years of civil war which played out in the park, the wildlife population was nearly decimated by the early 1990s. In 2018, population counts exceeded 100,000 animals; its rebirth credited to the adoption of a 21st century conservation model of balancing the needs of wildlife and people. We look forward to seeing what the coming years have in store for Gorongosa and seeing it return to its rightful place as one of Africa’s greatest parks.

Why visit Gorongosa?

Restored habitats now support thriving populations of elephants, lions, buffalo, and leopards, alongside large herds of waterbuck, sable, kudu, and zebra moving across the savanna, while hippos and crocodiles hold the rivers and wetlands.

Gorongosa is also a birder's paradise, with more than 400 bird species from bee-eaters to raptors to crowned cranes.

Gorongosa draws a fraction of the visitors that Kruger or the Serengeti see each year, so game drives here mean long stretches where it's just your vehicle and the animals. The park's small camp capacity is by design, part of the same restoration model that brought the wildlife back in the first place.
