Mozambique safari and beach trip

Gorongosa's conservation comeback up-close, then barefoot beach days

Suggested duration 12 days

From $12,700 per person

Visit:

Johannesburg, Gorongosa National Park, Vilanculos

Highlights

  • Stand inside one of Africa's most ambitious rewilding projects. This is no look-see safari. It's an opportunity to engage with a work-in-progress wilderness fighting for its life, and to leave personally invested in its future.

  • Join a rescued pangolin on its daily foraging walk, guided by one of the park’s veterinarians. It’s a rare, up-close encounter with the world’s most trafficked mammal on its journey back to the wild.

  • Ride along with Gorongosa's conservation team. It's not a performance, just whatever needs doing that day: a wild dog health check, perhaps, or tracking a collared lion pride.

  • An often-overlooked slice of the Indian Ocean awaits, rippling with long, white shorelines, abundant marine life, and day-fresh seafood. We won’t send you anywhere crowded. Just unhurried days and reefs made for slow exploration.

African wild dogs, or sometimes called painted dogs, play together in Gorongosa National Park

Spend your safari alongside the vets, rangers, and scientists bringing Gorongosa back from the brink, then unwind on a quiet, overlooked stretch of Indian Ocean coast.

Johannesburg

Day 1: Welcome to Southern Africa

Your Mozambique safari and beach trip starts with a quick pit stop in Johannesburg. A driver collects you at the airport for a private transfer to Satyagraha House to recharge before you head into the bush. The former home of Gandhi, this historic property is a tranquil hideaway hidden within a sprawling city. A vegetarian, homegrown tasting menu, light, pared-back rooms, and an overview of Gandhi's time in South Africa await.

Day 2: Johannesburg city tour

Explore Johannesburg on foot with local Charlie Moyo, whose storytelling brings the city's layered history to life. Begin in the "Wiser West" (Marshalltown), the oldest district of the inner city, tracing Joburg's story from the gold rush and the plush Edwardian era to its spectacular urban decline and regeneration. Admire the iconic Shadow Boxer sculpture where Mandela and Tambo once had their law offices, and stand in the square where Gandhi once practiced law. End among Main Street's coffee shops and eateries, where modern Joburg's energy is on full display.

Day 3: Gorongosa safari start

Transfer privately to Johannesburg Airport for your flight to Mozambique. After clearing customs, take a bush flight to Muzimu Lodge, deep in Gorongosa National Park. Civil war all but obliterated the park's wildlife, but two decades of landmark conservation have made it one of Africa's most exciting safari destinations. Sightings are more rewarding because the wildlife (including lions, elephants, and rare African wild dogs) is not yet fully accustomed to people. Set off on an afternoon game drive, then dine to the sounds of riverine forest.

Day 4: Private pangolin safari

Today, the savannah can wait. Join one of the park's veterinarians on a daily ritual few outsiders see: a foraging walk with a pangolin rescued from poachers. As golden light spills through the fever trees, watch the vet coax the world's most trafficked mammal toward rotting logs, where it sniffs out its fill of ants. Each outing is a vital step toward returning it to the wild; the park's Pangolin Guardians program has cared for more than 150 to date. Back at Muzimu Lodge, relax before a late-afternoon game drive.

Day 5: Restoration and community

Go behind the scenes of one of Africa's most ambitious restoration projects with the Gorongosa restoration team. Learn how a park emptied of wildlife by war was revived, from reintroduced leopard to elephants still born tuskless as a legacy of poaching. Later, visit the Girls Club (weekdays only), where young people aged 10 to 16 learn about health and education, gaining real choices about their futures. Expect singing and dancing. Return to Muzimu Lodge for a slow afternoon by the pool and dusk on your deck above the river.

Day 6: Mozambique walking safari

Swap Muzimu for its sister camp, Chicari, within walking distance but in a different landscape. Canvas tents on raised decks line a natural clay pan where wildlife gathers, with plains stretching toward Lake Urema. Simpler and wilder, the camp is built for walking. Set off on foot with exceptional guides, reading tracks and scat for elephant, lion, buffalo, wild dog, and, with luck, reintroduced leopard. Afterward, choose a game drive or, from April to May, a boat trip on Lake Urema. A night drive reveals civet and other nocturnal species.

Gorongosa National Park

Day 7: Safari finale

Spend your final day in Gorongosa however you like: a three-hour walking safari, a 4x4 drive across the savannah, or simply time to yourself. For something different, take a full-day trip to Mount Gorongosa, the forested massif that feeds the park's rivers. A helicopter carries you over sandstone cliffs, with Lake Urema shining in the distance. Rainforest trails lead to waterfalls and endemic species such as the green-headed oriole and tiny pygmy chameleon. Return to camp for sundowners and dinner under the stars.

8

Vilanculos

Day 8: Bush to beach

After a last breakfast in the bush, trade the savannah and vine-tangled forests for the turquoise Indian Ocean. A light aircraft flies you straight to Vilanculos, where Saudade will be your home for the next five days. Whitewashed walls, palm-thatched roofs, and sweeping sea views invite you to linger. Kick off your shoes and let the afternoon drift by to the sound of the waves. At sunset, raise a glass to the journey so far, with the Bazaruto Archipelago on the horizon.

Days 9, 10 & 11: Reefs, rest, and the open sea

Spend your days as you wish. After five days in the bush, you might plant yourself on the white sand, straying only for fresh seafood, and sleep in your breezy villa. Adventure calling? Snorkel Two Mile Reef, watching for dolphins and dugongs among tropical fish. Try sea fishing or take to the waves on a kiteboard. Certified divers can explore the protected Bazaruto Archipelago National Park, where coral reefs and rocky pinnacles shelter turtles, rays, and shoals of reef fish. Surface to a long, lazy lunch by the sea.

Day 12: Farewell Mozambique

Your Mozambique safari and beach trip comes to a gentle close. Spend one last morning overlooking the rippling blues of the Indian Ocean. A private driver transfers you to Vilanculos Airport for your flight to Johannesburg and onward international flight home.
