Traditional and ancient, novel and futuristic, Japan travel ricochets between living traditions and buzzing modernity
A place where sipping matcha during a chanoyu ceremony and a robot taking your order at a restaurant make up different parts of the same culture, Japan is marvelously textured. From Tokyo’s pulsing energy—where precision and momentum define daily life—to countryside villages shaped by centuries-old routines, Japan moves with a sense of purpose that feels both ancient and immediate. Contrast is omnipresent yet harmonized, guided by seasonality, craftsmanship, and a reverence for form.
Cherry blossoms, Mount Fuji, sushi, samurai, and shrines may have inspired your wanderlust, but the real Japan rarely announces or reveals itself all at once. Rather, depth and character unfold on its own terms with restraint, sincerity, and humility: an ancient tea ceremony where every gesture carries meaning; a meal dictated by the fleeting availability of seasonal ingredients; or a conversation enriched by cultural subtext as much as language.
Hard to explain and even harder to forget, let us introduce you to Japan’s soulful heart. Embracing omotenashi, hospitality rooted in quiet anticipation, personalization, and carefully considered touches, we’ll show you Japan not as a visitor, but as a welcome guest.

Our luxury Japan tours are private, tailor-made itineraries designed for you to experience Japan from the inside. Guided by local experts, you’re invited into traditions and cultural institutions for an opportunity to feel Japan’s wonders rather than simply observing them. Bypassing listicle highlights, we introduce you to chefs, masters, personalities, and arbiters in their personal kitchens, ateliers, temples, and workshops. Shifting from passenger to participant, our Japan tours feel personal, immersive, and full of ichi-go ichi-e — unrepeatable, cherished moments.

Fantastic - it was a pleasure to work with the EJ team. I think you had a good idea what I was looking for with a family trip. The best part for me was exploring a less traveled part of Japan and seeing the Japanese countryside!

The best time to travel to Japan depends on your priorities, and every trip benefits from thoughtful timing.
Our favorite seasons are spring and fall when temperatures are moderate. If you’re willing to layer up, late November’s fall colors and early December are secret seasons with far thinner crowds, even in the larger cities. It’s also an opportunity to cozy into Japanese winter culture and attend the Chichibu Night Festival.
Peak season in Japan is October, and late March/early April when cherry blossoms erupt. We recommend booking 12 months ahead to secure your preferred accommodations and the best guides. Summers in Japan are humid and hot, prohibitively so for some travelers.
We broadly recommend against visiting Japan during Golden Week (the first week of May) and the New Year period, when many guides and hospitality workers take time off to be with their families.

Electric cities hum between fleecy northern landscapes and southern beaches—Japan is spectacular in every direction
A world unto itself, Tokyo is an intoxicating mix of tradition and modernity. Step back in time in hallowed temple halls, then slingshot into the neon-lit future. Sprawling yet intimate, travelers will find that Tokyo unfolds across a quilt of distinct neighborhoods. From nostalgic Asakusa to indie Shimokitazawa to kinetic Shibuya, each invites exploration, with a pocket for every mood. Shop, game, museum-hop, and people-watch. And of course, eat your way through the world’s most Michelin-starred city, where every izakaya, vending machine, and takeout counter is a food adventure.
