1
Tokyo
Land in Tokyo to start your active Japan trip. With bags loaded into a waiting vehicle, a private transfer brings you to Fairmont Tokyo. Settle in, shower, eat dinner, and unwind from your long flight. If you’ve arrived early, take a dip in the hotel’s sky-high pool, ease into the trip with a workout or spa treatment, or simply watch the veil of night fall over Tokyo’s blinking lights.
2
Tokyo
With a guide, begin your day with privileged access inside a working sumo stable for asa-geiko, the wrestlers’ early training ritual. This is not a performance, but an intimate glimpse into Japan’s most revered sporting tradition, where discipline, strength, and ceremony intertwine. Watch young rikishi practice mere feet away, guided by retired champions in a rarefied athletic world few outsiders enter. After this unforgettable encounter, enjoy a relaxed afternoon at leisure in Tokyo.
3
Tokyo
Drive to Nikko, where centuries of Shinto and Buddhist devotion meet a breathtaking landscape of forest, lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs—especially scenic in fall. Touring the UNESCO-listed Toshogu Shrine, your guide brings Tokugawa shogunate history to life. After lunch, get a taste of Tochigi’s sake culture. In a sake cave, brewers explain how the misunderstood drink is more akin to beer than rice wine. Return via Utsunomiya for an umami-rich dinner in Japan’s gyoza capital.
4
Hakone
Leave Tokyo behind for Hakone, where forested mountains rise in the shadow of Mount Fuji. With your guide, explore the Hakone Open-Air Museum, where monumental sculptures and modern masterpieces unfold across landscaped gardens. After lunch, walk the cedar-lined path along Lake Ashi to Hakone Shrine, its torii gate poised at the water’s edge. Ascend Mount Komagatake by cable car for arresting views—perhaps even a glimpse of Fuji—before retiring to Gora Kadan.
5
Hakone
Set out today for an unforgettable guided hike on Mount Hōei, a volcanic flank of Mount Fuji shaped by the mountain’s last great eruption. Beginning from the Fujinomiyaguchi 5th Station, trek through stark slopes of sand and gravel, with alpine plants clinging to the terrain. Traverse panoramic ridgelines overlooking Suruga Bay before descending into the dramatic Hōei Crater. A final climb brings you to the summit, where Fuji feels thrillingly close.
6
Takashima
Travel by bullet train to Kyoto and continue on to Takashima. Arrive at Kakuden-ji Temple to begin a three-night Zen meditation hiking retreat. Guided by a Soto Zen monk, learn the practice of zazen (sitting in meditation) and take mindfulness walks in the surrounding hills. Through meditation and movement, explore the balance between breath, body, and landscape. This evening, savor a shojin ryori meal (Buddhist monk cuisine) and settle into your humble temple quarters.
7
Takashima
Begin your day with morning zazen and Zen teachings, followed by a warm porridge breakfast at the temple. Then set out on a four-hour hike through Takashima’s forested trails, guided by pathfinders who share the human stories woven into these serene landscapes. Through their local lens, the wilderness reveals itself in raw beauty and deeper meaning. Return to the temple for evening practice, shojin ryori, and a restorative sleep.
8
Hikone
Rise with quiet morning meditation and a simple breakfast before transferring to Hikone City to continue your retreat at Seiryo-ji Temple. Set out on a three-hour guided walk along ancient paths weaving through cedar forests and gently rolling hills. Immersed in nature’s stillness, balance physical movement with contemplative pause. Return to Seiryo-ji for evening Zen practice, seasonal temple cuisine, and restful accommodation within the zendo.
9
Kyoto
After morning zazen and final teachings over breakfast, transfer privately to Kyoto. Settle into HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, a refined sanctuary built upon a former Mitsui family estate. Your unscheduled afternoon invites relaxation. Lounge in the courtyard garden, dine on elevated Kyoto cuisine, unwind in the natural thermal spring spa, or reserve a private onsen.
10
Kyoto
Spend time in Arashiyama, long cherished by nobles seeking quiet reflection. Take a joyful guided rickshaw ride through the iconic Bamboo Forest, where sunlight filters through towering stalks—symbols of resilience and grace. Continue to prestigious Tenryu-ji Temple, pausing in its meticulously manicured Zen gardens shaped by masterful tradition. This afternoon, join a mother-daughter tea master lineage for a private chado ceremony, not simply observing but participating in this centuries-old expression of hospitality.
11
Kyoto
Rise early for a hushed visit to Fushimi Inari, arriving before the crowds to experience its vermilion torii gates in near silence. Walk partway up the forested mountainside as light filters through the endless arcade of gates. Later, stand on Kiyomizu-dera’s wooden stage, built without nails, overlooking Kyoto’s tiled rooftops. Sip from the Otowa Waterfall, then wander the preserved lanes of Ninenzaka, where old Kyoto lingers.
12
Kyoto
A driver collects you for a private transfer to Kansai International Airport. Fly onward to Tokyo to connect with your international flight home. Depart Japan with a strengthened spirit, quiet clarity, and the lingering imprint of mountain paths, temple stillness, and moments of discovery that will stay with you long after the journey ends.
From summit views to practicing zazen, we designed this trip for travelers who feel the best rewards are earned, not given.
