Cape Winelands Travel

A place that reminds you of life's small pleasures, the Cape Winelands demand only that you delight in the rewards of what's been harvested, homemade, and handspun.

So often shoehorned into a South Africa travel itinerary as a day trip, it's our belief that a Cape Winelands tour is best enjoyed like a glass of Pinotage: slow-poured and savored. Time here is less about being impressed by 98-point bottles than tasting wines that tell a story of people and place. Each bottle uncorks a moment in time: the heat of a particular valley in summer, the invisible hand of a vintner, the quiet character lent by years in oak. These are wines born of hardworking centuries-old vines, sipped in cellars that don't ask for dress codes, paired with whatever the kitchen made from what the garden grew that morning. With every detail of your private Cape Winelands tour handled, move between wine estates, farm tables, and valley trails with guides whose roots run as deep as the vines.

Why visit the Cape Winelands?

  • 1

A place where gabled Cape Dutch farmsteads are framed by manicured vines and mountains, the Winelands are as beautiful to move through as to look at. Hike forests, bike between estates, walk garden paths. Then, sit down and feast

  • What to expect on a luxury Cape Winelands trip

Every trip with Extraordinary Journeys is tailor-made, crafted in direct collaboration with one of our destination specialists.

    Memorable accommodations

Your Winelands specialist will help you choose between two distinct ways to stay: the immersive world of a wine estate — where garden tours, harvest meals, and forest trails are steps from your suite — or the walkability of Franschhoek village, where boutique hotels sit within a five-minute stroll of the valley's best restaurants. Properties such as Boschendal and Le Cle anchor either end of that spectrum.

    Extraordinary experiences

We use our specialist knowledge to curate exclusive experiences that feel meaningful to you. A private Land Rover carries you between vineyards on a private wine safari; walk Franschhoek's valley trails with a guide who grew up here, or roll up your sleeves to blend varietals one-on-one with a winemaker. Chocolate, cheese, and gelato tastings keep snack-obsessed children equally absorbed.

    Expert guides

Our oenophile guides are wine-obsessed insiders with deep connections to the region's growers, makers, chefs, and local personalities. They introduce you to a wine scene defined by a compelling tension: some of the oldest vines in the New World, worked by a new generation of winemakers redefining what South African wine can be. Your private tour bends to your palate, your pace, or anything that catches your eye along the way.

The best time to travel to the Cape Winelands

A genuinely year-round destination, the best time to visit the Cape Winelands often takes the rest of your South Africa safari itinerary into account — and sometimes simply when your school or work calendar allows. That said, each season offers a distinct mood and set of pleasures.

    • Spring (September, October, November): Wildflowers, warming days, and the vineyards in fresh growth. Fewer crowds than peak summer; ideal conditions for outdoor activities.
    • Summer (December, January, February): Warm, lively, and long days. Weekends can be busy with Cape Town locals, but the atmosphere is festive and the outdoor dining exceptional.
    • Autumn (March, April, May): Harvest season — the most dramatic and exciting time to visit. Cellars are alive with activity; the landscape turns gold and copper.
    • Winter (June, July, August): Cooler and quieter, with fireplaces, full-bodied reds, and half-empty restaurants. Outdoor activities remain possible with layers. If you don't have to travel during the very busy Festive Season (December 20 to January 5), we'd recommend visiting another time.

Our favorite parts of a Cape Winelands tour

    • Explore Stellenbosch on foot on a classic foodie walk through one of South Africa's oldest towns, with cellar tastings and a heritage lunch platter along the way.

    • Take a private Wine Drive Safari through Waterford Estate's 297-acre property, touring in a Land Rover and tasting at the vine origins themselves, including the flagship red: The Jem.

    • Visit the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden — whose works sell at Christie's London — set within Stellenbosch's fynbos landscape.

    • Cycle Franschhoek's gravel backroads between estate cellars on a guided afternoon ride

    • A werf picnic is set up for you on Boschendal's lawns. Graze a basket stocked with bread, charcuterie, and preserves made entirely from the estate's own farm.

    • Walk the Porcupine Trail through vineyards and wild protea bushes, pairing each stop with a tasting. Finish with Waterford's famous chocolate and wine pairing

    • Shop the galleries of Franschhoek's main street — Everard Read, Ebony, Grande Provence — before settling into a long lunch on the sun-drenched terrace at Le Petite Ferme

    • Knead dough and bake bread with the team at Moreson's Bread & Wine — a hands-on morning that smells exactly as good as it sounds, followed by lunch made from what you made.

    • Follow the Méthode Cap Classique Route through Franschhoek's sparkling specialists, sipping bottle-fermented wines made in the tradition the valley's Huguenot founders.

    • During harvest season, La Motte opens its cellar doors to an experience unavailable any other time of year: tasting the grapes, the fermenting juice, and the finished wine side by side.

    • See the Franschhoek Valley in aerial widescreen from a helicopter, mountain ranges and vine rows stretching in every direction below.

    • Wander Bien Donne's lavender fields and herb garden before picking up something worth bringing home from the farm shop or deli.

    • Tee off at Pearl Valley, a Jack Nicklaus Signature Course set against the dramatic backdrop of the Paarl Mountain — one of the finest golf courses in South Africa.
