Encounter Mara
Encounter Mara is a down-to-earth classic safari camp in the exclusive Naboisho Conservancy of the Maasai Mara. It’s perfect for those looking for great game-viewing and knowledgeable guides and less concerned with the frills of an ultra-luxurious camp. The 12 safari tents are simple and comfortable with warm earthy tones. They’re each tucked into the edge of an acacia forest and face the open plains of the Mara. The service is attentive and sweet, the food is excellent, and you’ll hardly ever have an empty wine glass while you spend the evening around the fire, sharing stories of your day’s activities with fellow guests and getting to know your guides and local staff.
The beauty of Naboisho is in its size, abundance of wildlife, and for its model of community land-ownership. The 50,000 acres are owned by 500 Maasai community members who each benefit from the careful flow of tourism in the area. This becomes evident as you get to know your staff, guides, and when you visit your guide’s village. You’ll also seldom see another vehicle as you peruse the conservancy by 4×4 or on foot. We love the authentic and quirky feel of this camp, void of bells and whistles and full of character and great culture and wildlife experiences.
Encounter Mara is best experienced from July to September if you want to catch the Great Migration, but game-viewing is still good outside of these months. However, it’s closed in May due to rain.
