Special activity focused trips and solo travel group set departure options

Although we are advocates of customized private travel, we also recognize there is a time and place for group set departures, where couples or solo travel groups come together for a “bucket list” trip that is better priced and better experienced with others – especially those with a specialty focus or hard-to-reach destination. Whether it’s an Antarctica cruise, guided conservation travel, or a guided hiking tour in the Andes, creating your group set departure is going to be great.

Guided conservation travel focus

Specialty conservation experiences often pop up on our radar and involve hands-on interaction with the wildlife and access to the teams of veterinarians and land management specialists behind the scenes of a classic safari. In the past, we have featured guided conservation travel focused on lion protection in Namibia, elephant collaring in Zimbabwe, and rhino notching in South Africa. Annual events, like Lewa’s game census, need many hands on deck and solo travel groups can be accommodated with proper planning. See below for a sample of what a group-based, guided conservation travel itinerary could look like, and watch this space for updates!

Guided Hiking Tours, Guided Walking Treks

Not everyone in your orbit might enjoy roughing it to summit a world-renowned mountain peak or a multi-day guided walking trek. If you have the determination, but not the travel partner, join one of our solo group travel set departures to Peru, Chile, Africa, and Nepal (just to name a few). Please keep in mind all of the below can be done on private basis as well.

Set Departure Solo Travel Groups

For travelers who are looking to save money and have an open mind about traveling with others, set departures can be a great option. Small group set departures are commonly driving safaris across East Africa because of the discounts which come with maximizing space in the safari vehicle. We know a handful of great operators with guaranteed window seats and dates if you like the idea of new-found camaraderie on your travels.

If you aren’t keen on driving, take to the skies on one of Elewana’s SkySafari departures.

Extraordinary Journeys also offers an annual African group adventure with our friend and lifelong safari fanatic, John Moody. In 2019, John led the solo travel group on a 12-nights adventure in South Africa, 2020 was an exploration of Kenya & Rwanda. In 2021, solo travel group members are invited to Zimbabwe. His set departures tend to book up quickly, thanks to John’s immense knowledge of the continent (and charming personality), so be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming dates and destinations.

Single Travel

An African safari can be one of the most well-suited opportunities for single travelers looking for social outlets. With shared game drives, sundowner stops, and communal meals (not everywhere-make sure to ask!), you can have all the benefits of a shared experience without being committed to the same faces and personalities every step of the trip.

Though set departures tend to offer more modest single supplements, private travel at the right time of year (many lodges offer no single supplement incentives during green season) might not cost more than if it was shared with others. Utilize some of our favorite value for money camps and let us guide you about maximizing your budget with stay/pay offers if you have your sights set on a custom trip.
