Buenos Aires, Ushuaia, Antarctica

Highlights

  • The meditative hush of complete isolation, caravans of whales, a midnight sun, charismatic penguins, and indescribable frozen beauty.

  • We’ve chosen a small expedition ship, so you spend more time adventuring in Antarctica and less time waiting.

  • We don’t rush you through Ushuaia. Linger for crowd-free Patagonia hiking and an invitation to a seafood lunch.

  • A cabaret-set tango performance, gaucho-guided horseback riding, and bodegón dining imbue this trip with Argentine cultural touchpoints.

Tiny figures walk across a vast snowy plain beneath steep white mountains, with blowing clouds and bright light above them.

The refined pleasures of Buenos Aires, Patagonia’s wild frontier, and otherworldly Antarctica tangle on this journey of the senses.

Argentine Patagonia to Antarctica Trip

1

Buenos Aires

Day 1: Arrive in Argentina

Touch down in Argentina’s seductive capital and settle into the chic CasaSur Palermo Hotel. This afternoon, fall into the city’s rhythm on a privately guided Buenos Aires walking tour that starts in the elegant enclave of Recoleta. Marble mansions, art galleries, and the famously ornate cemetery are highlights, alongside the jaw-dropping El Ateneo bookstore and opulent Colón Theatre. Your evening is at leisure. Dine out or recuperate from your flight.

Day 2: Gaucho Culture & Tango

Journey to the Argentine pampas, bound for San Antonio de Areco. Walk charming cobblestone streets, visit an artisanal silversmith, post up at an authentic gaucho bar, and then experience rural ranch life at a working estancia. After a trail ride, return to the city in time for a night of bold performance and fine wine at the Rojo Tango Show.

3

Ushuaia

Day 3: Edge of the World

Fly south to Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city, backdropped by the snowcapped Martial Range and fronted by the Beagle Channel. Travelers often rush through Ushuaia, but you’ll linger in this wild Patagonian outpost. Wrapped within the Cerro Alarkén Nature Reserve mountainscape, Arakur Ushuaia Resort & Spa is your design hotel sanctuary. Settle in, then dedicate some time to the hot tubs on the terrace for panoramic Channel views.

4

Ushuaia

Day 4: Laguna Esmeralda Hike

Set out with a guide for an invigorating hike. You’ll wend through subantarctic forest, mossy peat bogs, and past the quiet industry of beaver dams. After two hours of moderate walking, the path opens to Laguna Esmeralda, its mirror-like, jade waters framed by snowcapped peaks. Savor a picnic lunch before retracing your steps through this serene wilderness.

Ushuaia

Day 5: Privileged Dinner Invitation

Today, you’ll trace the Beagle Channel’s wild coast for a soulful Patagonia dining experience. Stop at Laguna Victoria for a snack before continuing past the wind-sculpted flag trees of Brown Bay to Puerto Almanza, a humble fishing village of crab anglers. Just beyond, a pioneering female captain welcomes you into her remote seaside home for a four-course feast. It’s an intimate lunch spread of frontier storytelling.

Day 6: Set Sail

Enjoy an unhurried morning. Pack for your cruise and make any last-minute preparations. You have time for lunch and some downtown sightseeing. Later, board Ultramarine, a state-of-the-art expedition ship designed for polar navigation. As you cruise through the steep-sided Beagle Channel, keep watch for whales and dolphins. Your journey to the White Continent has started.

Days revolve around three main meals and fascinating lectures on wildlife, history, glaciology, and geology delivered by polar experts. You’ll arrive with a greater understanding of Antarctica’s geography, marine life, and birdlife—including behavior and identification. It’s also a social time; get to know your crew and the other passengers.

Day 9: South Shetland Islands

Landfall, at last. This odyssey begins amid the wild beauty of the South Shetland Islands—jagged, wind-lashed sentinels guarding the edge of the White Continent. Here, ice-clad peaks rise above penguin-filled shores where gentoo, adele, and chinstrap colonies bustle, and giant petrels wheel overhead. Potential landing sites may include Deception Island’s surreal caldera or the icy cliffs of Half Moon Island. It’s a surreal prelude to the frozen grandeur that awaits.

10 to 12

Antarctica Cruise

Day 10 to 12: Antarctic Peninsula

Venture deeper, following a coastline of soaring glaciers and sculpted icebergs. Overheard, snow-draped peaks define Antarctica’s most cinematic landscapes. Each day unfolds at the mercy of wind, ice, and sea as your expedition leader charts a route along the peninsula. Pass splendid days on Zodiac safaris, watching Antarctic penguins guard their nests, or stepping ashore to reach historic huts.
