Where to Travel in May

Spring in the northern hemisphere is fall in the southern, so it’s the perfect time to experience the warm temperatures South Africa has to offer.  Warm temperatures in both Cape Town and on safari make May one of our favorite secret seasons in Africa.

Here’s our list of the best places to visit in May:

  • Flood watch in Maun, Botswana This safari town along the Thamalakane River, eagerly anticipates the arrival of the flood each year.  When the annual flood waters arrive, the country comes alive. This semi-arid area relies on flooding to bring water to animals and rural communities and to deter poachers. It is in this untouched, immaculate delta, that you can view some of the world’s most beautiful and endangered species flock to the water’s edge. Take a ride by boat to enjoy the wildlife and then do as the locals do, and wash your hands and face in the magical flood waters to rinse away misfortune and bring luck. Feel refreshed after visiting Maun during this treasured time.
  • Swim with Whale Sharks in Western Oz If white sand beaches, fresh seafood, local wineries, and seashell collecting sounds like your idea of fun, then a visit to the western side of Australia is for you. If surfing, snorkeling, and swimming with sharks is more your speed, then Western Oz is a perfect fit for you, too! In one area, appropriately named Shark Bay, you can slide off your sandals and walk right into the water with local whale sharks! These sharks aren’t looking to you as their next meal, these gentle giants are on the hunt for plankton.
  • Secret Season in South Africa From the historic city of Cape Town to scenic drives along the coast, to the iconic wildlife in Kruger National Park, South Africa is popular for hundreds of reasons. May is a magical month which falls between typical holiday seasons in both hemispheres and the weather is warm and mild both in Cape Town and on safari. Temperatures are slightly chilly in the evenings and warmer during the daytime, so pack a little of everything. You’ll be impressed with the city amenities Cape Town has to offer including fine dining, spas, and galleries. Or rent a car and take a drive along the 180-mile Garden route for breathtaking views and world-class wine tasting before meandering through Kruger National Park to see the big five. Visiting South Africa during May should be placed at the top of your bucket list!
  • Full Flood of Victoria Falls Victoria Falls, located on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe, is as impressive as it is massive, doubling the height of Niagara Falls. You can hear the thundering water from a mile away and feel the mist as you approach. Your best views during full flood are from the Zambia side of the Falls, but we also suggest taking to the skies on a microlight for the full sensory experience. Other activities in the area include helicopter flights, bungee jumping, and wildlife safaris. (If you’re looking for low-water season and the best photo opportunities, consider a guided tour to Devil’s Pool during the dry season from August to January. Devil’s Pool is on the edge of the falls, but protected by a lip so you won’t fall down! Your followers won’t believe the photos of you living on the edge!)
  • Secret Season for hiking Machu Picchu Peru is also home to Machu Picchu, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Tourists flock to this ancient Incan ruin city to experience the deep and mysterious history. To avoid the crowds, but still get the full experience, consider visiting from April to May and September to October, right on the edges of the dry (and busy) seasons. Take in all the wonder on your hike up the 2,000 stairs and prepare to be amazed at the advanced architecture and the rich history you’re surrounded by on the Inca Trail.
