Chundukwa River Lodge

Close enough to Victoria Falls, but far enough to shrug off the bustle of Livingstone, Chundukwa River Lodge stands out as a unique, owner-operated farm-stay experience. Sitting riverfront and clutched by a canopy of riverine forest, days at Chundukwa flow to the rhythm of the Zambezi River. Unhurried, it’s a wonderful introduction to Zambia for those just setting out on a luxury safari, or to unwind post-safari—leaving behind those early morning game drive wakeups. Included with every guest staying on a full-board basis is a privately guided day trip to historic Livingstone and Victoria Falls.

Chundukwa’s five riverside chalets look directly upon the Zambezi—so close you can hear hippos honking in the reeds. Seated upon stilts with unique, open-air facades, the thatch-roof suites feel like treehouses. Each chalet has a unique design and decor, further reminding you that this is a home, not a hotel.

Families and small groups are best served in the three-bedroom Chundu Cottage. Sleeping up to six guests, it is privately served by a hospitality team that includes a chef, server, and housekeeper. It also has a plunge pool with a fence so parents can feel at greater ease. Fireside chairs and a riverside picnic table are lovely places to gather as a group.

A down-to-Earth place of ease, Chundukwa River Lodge is a place to do a little, or a lot. Days here don’t revolve around twice-daily game drives, but rather, a host of activities that unfold on-property, on horseback, or while floating the mighty Zambezi. The lodge has a stable with horses for all levels of riders (including kids); guests can saddle up for a shorter riverside ride, or a longer half-day excursion. Other activities include sunrise or sunset cruises on the Zambezi (there are great photo opportunities at every turn—hippo, crocodile, and elephant are often spotted), scenic floating river picnics, guided bush walks, and mountain biking, fishing for your own dinner, and meeting the local community during a village and school visit. Day trips to Livingstone and iconic Victoria Falls bring you a little further afield. Set out with an expert guide in a private vehicle to make the most of area. Memorable experiences like the “Flight of the Angels” helicopter or microlight ride over Victoria Falls and—depending on water levels—the opportunity to swim in Devil’s Pool can also be arranged.

Back at camp, spend a little quality time relaxing in the lodge’s lounge area, wildlife-watching from the Zambezi viewing deck, or taking a dip in the rock-hewn plunge pool. Dining is a farm-to-fork philosophy where the menus are guided by what is available in the garden and from neighboring growers. Dine on the terrace, or privately, under thatch.
