Camelthorn Lodge

Camelthorn, Bomani Tented Camp’s sister camp, is located in an acacia forest in a private concession just outside of southern Hwange National Park. The game-viewing in Hwange is excellent, particularly during the dry season of April to October. Small waterholes and birdfeeders will attract woodland creatures and colorful birdlife to the campsite, and big game can be observed at close quarters from a hide at Stoffie’s Pan, less than a mile away. Game drives can be done in Hwange or inside the concession, where night drives and bush walks are permitted.

Camelthorn is a luxury lodge, comprised of only eight Forest Villas. These villas have been built out of concrete and stone, large glass windows, log fireplaces, ceiling fans, and en-suite bathroom with bath, showers, double vanity, and separate toilets. An upstairs patio is accessed by an outdoor wrought iron staircase and provides an almost treehouse-like feeling. An ancient camelthorn tree is the central feature of the lodge with living and dining areas surrounding this massive tree. There is no shortage of space as the dining area with three open, natural stone fireplaces and the wall of sliding glass is simply huge. A bar, teak lounge deck and splash pool complete the picture.

Everything about Camelthorn is big and comfortable, but we are not crazy about all of the concrete, which feels a bit unnatural and misplaced. The upside however, is that Hwange can be quite cold in July and August, and Camelthorn’s solid walls keep everything a bit warmer.
