Lewa Safari Camp

Lewa Safari Camp is a tented camp in the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, overlooking Mount Kenya and the reserve. This conservancy is a terrific place to view the endangered black rhino as it is home to about 10% of Kenya’s rhino population. The game viewing in Lewa is excellent and optional activities include horse– and camelback riding, quad biking, a local village visit, and hiking in the Ngare Ndare rainforest with a dip in a waterfall. Note, it is Lewa Wilderness that has the horses and Lewa Safari Camp guests can ride with them at Lewa Wilderness if they have availability.

Comfortable tents with typical safari-style décor each have a thatched roof and veranda. Staff members are friendly and attentive. The Lewa Safari Camp main areas include a lounge and dining area for relaxing after a day of exciting game viewing, as well as gardens and a swimming pool to soak up the calming ambiance or cool off.

The downsides to Lewa Safari Camp are that it is the largest property in Lewa, meaning it lacks the more intimate feel of the other properties in the Conservancy and it does not have the advantage of having close ties to the Craig-Douglas family that founded Lewa (as Lewa House and Lewa Wilderness do). The camp is the former ranger post, so the views from camp aren’t as sweeping and spectacular as the other camps in the Lewa.

That said, we really believe Lewa is a great addition to a Kenya safari and as the least expensive property in Lewa, Lewa Safari Camp is a great fit for someone who prioritizes access to the wildlife and land over distinctive accommodation. In addition, we consistently get excellent feedback from clients who stay here, particularly about the quality of the guides.
