Where to Travel in February

Winter in the northern hemisphere is summer in the southern, so it’s easy to flip the script on the weather. And when all else fails, just head to the Equatorial region for sun, sun, sun. The best places to visit in winter offer lush landscapes, moderate temperatures, and plenty of activities outside.

Here’s our list of the best places to visit in February:

  • Calving Season in Tanzania– Starting in January, the Wildebeest, among other animals, migrate to the Serengeti to begin their calving season. The Serengeti makes for the perfect destination due to the lush greenery that follows the November rains. By February, an estimated 8,000 baby wildebeest are born each day. The safari opportunities to celebrate the calving season in Tanzania are endless.
  • Grey Whales in Magdalena Bay in Baja – Grey whales are another animal that endures a 12,000-mile marathon migration to calve their young. Their destination? The warm water lagoons of Baja, Mexico. From January to March, grey whales occupy the Mexican waters as they calve, nurse, and mate. Enjoy the great amenities Baja has to offer while you witness this one-of-a-kind experience.
  • Sauti za Busara in Zanzibar – This festival was designed to bring people together to celebrate the excitement of African music under the exquisite African skies. The festival takes place in Stone Town, Zanzibar. If music of every genre is your idea of a good time, this festival is one you’re not going to miss.
  • Reflections on the Salar de Uyuni – The Salar de Uyuni is the world’s largest salt flat, which may not sound like one of South America’s greatest wonders, but it is. The Salar de Uyuni is truly ”the place where Heaven meets Earth,” especially in February. January to April is the wet season in Bolivia which means the magnificent salt flats become one big, knee-deep puddle. This enormous pool produces the largest reflection of the sky on the planet. Although Bolivia offers other, worldly experiences that you can tack on to your itinerary, recommend a winter visit to Bolivia that includes a stop at Salar de Uyuni.
  • Iguazu Falls in full flood – With 275 different waterfalls spanning 3 km, Iguazu Falls is an incredible natural wonder. These falls are shared between Argentina and Brazil (the Iguazu River forms the border between the two countries) and are one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The falls are in full flood in January and February, making the water flow more impressive. With rainbows that litter the sky and lush greenery accenting these brilliant falls, your Argentinian vacation wouldn’t be complete without a stop here.
  • Secret Season in Kenya – The secret season in East Africa is a local delight and the perfect time for a blissfully private safari in Kenya. Because most visitors are focused on the Maasai Mara’s migration times, the secret season is a period of recovery, growth, and the natural daily cycles of the animals in the Mara. Starting around October and running through to March, Kenya’s secret season is more affordable, and just as spectacular.
  • Game Viewing in CKGR- February is the prime time to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve in Botswana. The lush greenery is just a bonus when exploring this itinerary. This greenery attracts a number of zebras, springbok, and oryx- which means predators are never too far away. Birding is also at it’s best during this time. Sure- it may be the rainy season at this time- but that’s what makes this destination so wonderful.
