O’Reilly’s

O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat is located on the edge of Queensland’s Lamington National Park. The park was opened in 1915, essentially cutting the O’Reilly family off from the rest of the world. Embracing their unique position, the family opened a forest lodge in 1926 that provided comfortable accommodation, amazing guides and tons of walking trails.

Today, O’Reilly’s prides itself on their plethora of guided eco-activities they offer within the park. Between full and half-day walks, canopy walks, guided 4×4 drives, bird watching and feeding, Segway tours, glow worm tours, interactive wildlife encounters and their “Eco Rangers” children’s program that runs during Australian school holidays, there is plenty to keep you busy. Guests can go on an excursion to O’Reilly’s very own vineyard in the Canungra Valley. Amidst all the activity, we also recommend some downtime – whether it be a treatment at the Lost World Spa after a busy day, or at a minimum, time spent relaxing poolside. There are so many ways to explore this stunning rainforest and the wildlife within it. You may encounter two species of wallaby, three species of pademelon, sugar gliders and possums, koala and scores of other mammal species. With regard to birding, the regent bower bird and Albert’s lyrebird are the most exciting finds. If you are very lucky you may see a rare quoll or a dingo!

O’Reilly’s offers a mix of accommodation. Mountain View Rooms, Garden View Rooms and Canopy Suites are available in the main lodge. Self-contained Mountain Villas, with a full kitchen, living room, and Jacuzzi on a private veranda are more luxurious and intimate, but are quite a walk from the main lodge. Dining and public areas are enjoyable – large, but not luxurious. Ultimately, the star attraction here is the forest, not the accommodation. It is child friendly and works well for families, thanks to the wide range of activities and “down to earth” vibe. While the lodge is a bit dated, bigger and arguably more commercial than our usual haunts, the forest is terrific! It’s good value for money and really great for families.
