Bahia Vik

Hugged by sand dunes in the hip coastal enclave of José Ignacio, Bahia Vik sits on ten pretty acres of Atlantic beachfront. The barefoot-luxe resort is a mastery of contrast, juxtaposing strong architectural design with earthy coastal elements. Modernist boxy bungalows clad in materials like titanium sit planted in the sand; stark, grey slate infinity pools are backdropped against swaying sea grass; and stone walls mingle with thatch roofs and ramadas. True to the Vik aesthetic, bold art adorns all interiors—even some ceilings. Laid back and boho-chic, this is the type of place where saltwater hair and a silk kaftan are a standard-issue uniform.

There are 49 rooms at Bahia Vik distributed between 15 beach bungalows and 10 suites in the main building. Pass through garden walls to arrive at the reception and a communal living room. Cross through the open-air courtyard, and you’re greeted by a dining room that looks upon the southern Atlantic. There’s no shortage al fresco chairs and sofas that invite a lounge. An outdoor fire pit and no less than four dark stone infinity pools are splendid places to watch the sunset. Each of the ten oversized suites contained within the main house enjoys sweeping coastal views and private terraces.

Bahia Vik’s 15 cube-like casitas are ideal for families and guests wanting extra privacy. Most of the bungalows have two bedrooms and a living room. The rest have three-, four-, or five-bedrooms. No two are exactly alike, featuring art-filled interiors, distinct exteriors, and varying layouts. What underwrites them all are private patios and large sliding glass doors that call in a sea breeze, blurring the division between sand and sanctuary. Yes, Bahia Vik’s art curation is sublime (did you see the celestial mural by Uruguayan artist Musso?), but even in-suite, nature is never lost in the design.

Eating at Bahia Vik is a journey through the area’s terroir. At Zodiaco, locally grown produce and ingredients emphasize authentic Uruguayan dishes. Savor traditional asado (barbeque) and pulled-fresh-from-the-ocean seafood, complemented by local or VIK-produced Chilean wines. Meals can be taken in the dining room, on the open-air patio, or on the ambling terrace next to one of the pools.

Centrally located in Jose Ignacio, Bahia Vik lies in close proximity to cafés, restaurants, shops, and artist ateliers. Venture out with an expert for a specialty tour, go horseback riding amid the coastal dunes, take a yoga class or beach stroll (there’s direct access to Mansa Beach), go for a lazy bike ride or simply retreat beneath the shade of an umbrella on the pool deck.

Guests of Bahia Vik have access to the facilities at sister properties Playa Vik and Estancia Vik—a ~15-minute drive away. Head to Estancia Vik for horseback riding across the pampas, a polo lesson, or tennis; visit Playa Vik for a spa treatment and watersports. It’s also just a great opportunity to admire more Vik art and sculpture, and to dine in each property’s sumptuous restaurants.

Bahia Vik is located a half-mile by road from Playa Vik, but just a two-minute walk down the beach. Wondering which better suits your travel style? Playa Vik, exclusive and artsy, has a distinctive, avant-garde feeling that resonates well with couples and honeymooners. Hemmed by sand dunes, beachy Bahia Vik emotes a warmer resort getaway that’s better suited to families traveling with kids. (Did we mention there’s a playroom complete with foosball, ping pong, and a television?)
