During my recent trip in Zambia, one morning I awoke to find a long grey trunk snuffling around six feet from my bed. It belonged to a very curious elephant. He had been feeding from a tree next to my tent and obviously saw something he liked in my bathroom.After a few moments of rummaging, he changed his mind—toiletries don’t make for great elephant food, it turns out—and returned to his tree. That’s what I love about Zambia, it is totally unscripted and unpredictable.

What was the highlight of your trip?

You are not just an observer in Zambia. It’s an up close and personal safari experience; you can really immerse yourself in the wild. The best way to do this is on a walking safari—they were pioneered in Zambia. Whenever I’m there, I try to walk as much as possible. You can easily spend hours in the bush, tracking game with your guides, who are expertly trained and exceptional at what they do. It’s a completely different, totally exhilarating kind of safari.
