Posada Plaza Mayor
Located in the picturesque historical district of Colonia del Sacramento, Posada Plaza Mayor is a hotel that, in another life, was once an 18th-century Portuguese ranch and then an 1860s-era mansion. At the hotel’s heart is a lush and serene courtyard. Wrought iron embellishments, wood shutters, crawling vines, and a three-tier central fountain make it a space that feels like an old Spanish patio in Uruguay. A handful of suspended rattan chairs add a dash of boho whimsy.
Tastefully converted and updated, there are 17 rooms at Posada Playa Mayor. Exposed rock-hewn walls, dark turquoise accents, terracotta tile, hardwoods, sheepskin, and basket lamp shades give each room personality.
Posada Playa Mayor is ideal for travelers who want to wander Colonia’s cobblestone streets on foot and at ease. Overlooking the Río de la Plata, it’s just a two-minute walk from the hotel to the lighthouse, a four-minute walk to ancient city walls at Portón de Campo, and little more than a half mile to the ferry port.
