    The best time to visit Cairo

    The best time to visit Cairo is when you can experience the city’s icons and neighborhoods without suffering in discomfort. Everyone has a different threshold for heat, so your decision of when to visit Egypt is a personal one.  

    • Best: Winter in Egypt (December, January, and February) is the coolest, most comfortable stretch of the year. It’s ideal for long days on the exposed Giza Plateau or exploring Old Cairo on foot. Nights are cool and the days are clear. Pack a light layer for January mornings. However, with pleasant weather come crowds. This is peak season for Cairo travel. Expect longer line-ups and higher rates. You’re also wise to book further out than what feels necessary to secure the best guides and accommodations. Doubly so if the next chapter of your private Egypt trip is a luxury Nile cruise. November and March are also excellent. Expect clear, warm days with somewhat thinner crowds than the winter peak. 
    • Good: October and April. Temperatures climb, but remain manageable. Aligning with spring break, it’s well timed for luxury Egypt family travel. 
    • Secret seasons: If you can stand the heat, May and September are true gems. (Americans living in the southern states may find it toasty, though not unbearable.) Touring focuses on the early morning and late afternoon, with a midday pause when the sun is at its hottest. The upshot: crowds have truly thinned, and it’s possible to have those moments of contemplation that Egypt travel conjures. It’s also a season that extends superb value. 
    • Best avoided: June, July, and August. Daytime highs regularly clear 100°F, and several Nile cruise operators pause sailings, using this window for maintenance.
    • Festive season: the December holiday weeks (December 20 to January 5) carry a real premium, including compulsory gala dinners (Christmas and New Year’s Eve) and minimum-stay requirements on top of already-peak hotel rates.
