Sulawesi, Bali, Moyo Island

Highlights

  • Step inside local homes and sacred spaces alongside a knowledgeable guide to explore the Toraja worldview of death and ancestry, approached with care and respect.

  • Settle into quiet Eastern Bali, far from the island’s busiest corners, for the unhurried experience you imagine the “Island of the Gods” to be.

  • Play castaway at boat-access-only Amanwana on remote Moyo Island located deep inside Moyo Satonda National Park, where days unfold with reef snorkeling, jungle hikes, and sunset drinks above the sea.

  • Feel a sense of unscripted adventure and quiet wonder for nature as you follow jungle paths to waterfalls, snorkel coral gardens alive with turtles and reef fish, and wander rice terraces.

Thatched gazebo overlooks a pool and ocean view, with mountains in background under soft daylight.

Inspiring you to feel deeply rather than quickly, this journey weaves a Torajan cultural anthropology with East Bali’s regal past before an under-canvas beach finale on a secluded island.

Mystic and Remote Indonesia

1

Makassar

Day 1: Welcome to Indonesia

Touch down in the port city of Makassar, the gateway to Sulawesi’s cultured highland heart. You’re welcomed at the airport where a private vehicle awaits. With bags loaded, transfer to Hyatt Place Makassar, your centrally located, modern base. It’s been a long travel day; freshen up and tuck right into a king-size bed or unwind at 31 Altitude with a proper meal and rooftop views of 99 Domes Mosque.

2

Tana Toraja

Day 2: Into the Highlands

Fly to Palopo and drive into the storied heart of Toraja. Here, dramatic valleys give way to rice terraces and villages where buffalo horns adorn ancestral homes. Settle into Santai Toraja, your hillside hotel, enveloped by cool mountain air and ancient traditions. Your afternoon is at leisure. For dinner, get your first taste of papiong (baked in a bamboo tube) or aromatic pamarasan (likened to a savory stew).

Tana Toraja

Day 3: Toraja Cultural Immersion

With your guide, call on Palawa village where saddle-shaped tongkonan homes and ceremonial spaces are a living testament to Toraja ritual and tradition. Afterward, your journey ascends to Batutumonga, opening onto sweeping views of rice terraces, drifting mist, and the layered valleys below. You’ll end at Bori, a powerful megalithic site where towering stone menhirs commemorate status, ceremony, and enduring spiritual foundations, rooted in ancestral memory.

Tana Toraja

Day 4: Death & Ancestry

After breakfast, your guide steeps you in sacred landscapes to acquaint with Rambu Solo (complex funeral rites) and Aluk To Dolo ("The Way of the Ancestors"). In cave burial sites, and in the presence of Lemo’s cliffside niches and Tau Tau effigies, you’ll learn of a worldview where death is ritual, memory, and continuity—and very public. Conclude at Kete Kesu, one of the oldest traditional Toraja villages, to meet families saving up for elaborate funerals.

5

Makassar

Day 5: Return to Makassar

This morning, fly back to Makassar with time to explore the vibrant street life or to tour Fort Rotterdam, one of Indonesia’s best-preserved examples of Dutch colonial architecture. You’ll overnight once again at Hyatt Place Makassar

6

Bali

Day 6: Unspoiled East Bali

Fly to Bali and transfer to East Bali, famed for water palaces and rice paddy-clasped villages. Check in at Villa Campuhan, sitting upon a black sand beach with Mount Agung looming in the background. While away the afternoon in a hammock, practicing yoga, swimming in the infinity pool, enjoying a massage, and savoring al fresco meals.

Day 7: Tenganan Hike

After a nourishing breakfast, your guide collects you for a hike. Depart Kastal, winding through terraced rice fields and following jungle paths to reach the walled village of Tenganan, one of Bali’s oldest communities. Here, centuries-old customs endure. Watch a demonstration of double ikat weaving, practiced in just two places on Earth, and learn how the enclave has preserved its identity for generations. Return to Villa Campuhan for an afternoon at ease.

8

Bali

Day 8: Water Palaces & Viewpoints

With a guide, immerse in Bali’s regal past, where landscapes and architecture reveal a history of rival courts and artistic patronage. Begin at Tirta Gangga, a water palace of mirror-still pools, stepping stones, and fountains set within lush gardens. Pause at Bukit Cinta, where rice fields spill toward the coast and Mount Agung anchors the horizon, inviting a lingering gaze. The day ends at Taman Ujung, where Balinese design mingles with European influence.

Day 9: Paradisiacal Island Escape
