Volcanoes National Park Travel

Coming face-to-face with a magnificent mountain gorilla in Rwanda’s misty jungle is what draws most travelers to the country. Although Rwanda has a lot to offer outside of gorilla trekking, this is a moving and memorable experience that will undoubtedly be a highlight of your time here.

Volcanoes National Park is home to one of the highest populations of these majestic primates, with 178 of the animals making up 10 family groups. This famous park is one of the oldest in Africa and is part of the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanoes that spans Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. Just outside the town of Musanze, the dense, tangled forest awaits with one of Africa’s most spellbinding wildlife encounters. But there is a lot to explore in the surrounding area, from Dian Fossey’s conservation legacy to some of the most striking luxury lodges in the country.

  • The best time to visit Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda’s high altitude and rainforest ecosystem make for a pleasant highland climate most of the year, and being a small country, the weather is pretty consistent across regions. Rwanda’s beautiful rolling green hills are forged from the abundant rain the country can sometimes see, so to have the best gorilla trekking experience plan your trip between June and September during the longest stretch of dry weather.  March to May is the rainy season, when most of the country sees steady, heavier rain, at least in the afternoons, and trekking along muddy, slippery trails to get to the gorillas can be a hazard. Year-round you can expect some mist and light cloud cover in Volcanoes National Park because of its higher elevation—but this only adds to the mystique.
