Your most remote wilderness adventure yet
Suggested duration 11 days
From $13,000 per person
One private specialist guide, from start to finish. By the time you reach Danum, they know which species you're still hoping for and how you like to spend your afternoons.
Orangutans and pygmy elephants roam the Kinabatangan River. We split your time here between two lodges positioned in different spots across the wetlands to maximize your odds of encountering them.
Wild dining in the rainforest. In the Danum Valley, you’re brought to a secluded spot where a private table is set for two. Lunch is served beneath towering trees, with only hornbills for company.
A trip that moves at the pace of wonder. Where others rush through, you linger. We give four generous days to the Kinabatangan wetlands and three to Danum. Longer stays mean more sightings and space for the unexpected.

Three wildernesses, one intrepid journey through Sabah. By river, on foot, and after dark, nothing is guaranteed, except your wildest adventure yet.

1
Sepilok
Touch down at Sandakan Airport where you're welcomed and then transferred by private vehicle to Sepilok Nature Lodge. Your jungle chalet, complete with a standalone oval tub, sits on the edge of a lush forest reserve. Unpack, refresh, and settle in. Dinner is served on a terrace at the lake's edge, soundtracked by birdsong. If you arrive early enough in the day, you'll be introduced to your private guide, the specialist who will accompany you for the duration of your luxury Borneo tour.

Sepilok
After breakfast, visit the Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary for feeding time. This endemic species is Borneo's most comically distinctive character: pot-bellied and bulb-nosed with a pensive gaze. In the afternoon, tour the Rainforest Discovery Centre, tracing a network of elevated walkways through the treetops. Train your binoculars on the canopy, scanning for gibbons, hornbills, pig-tailed macaques, flying squirrels, and with luck, an orangutan. They're sightings made more likely with your specialist guide's exacting eye.
3
Kinabatangan River
The morning is built around second chances. Arrive at Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, your first assured orangutan sighting. Next door at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre, founder Dr. Wong introduces you to honey-loving rescues. Afterward, board the private boat that will bring you into lower Kinabatangan’s wetland wilderness. Settle into a chalet at Kinabatangan Wetlands Resort. Late afternoon holds a boat safari (proboscis monkeys, macaques, crocodiles, hornbills), dinner, and a dusk walk that brings small wonders into focus: frogs, insects, and nocturnal creatures.
4
Kinabatangan River
Depart in the early morning as the river stirs to life, but before the heat sets in. The route takes you to Danau Pitas, a tranquil oxbow lake off the main channel. Wading birdlife and mammals are some of the most rewarding wildlife watching of your stay. Savor a packed picnic breakfast and carry on, passing small Orang Sungai villages. Head out again in the late afternoon, tracking wildlife in the mangroves. Twilight brings the chance of fireflies gathering in the trees.
5
Kinabatangan River
Coastal mangroves give way to the denser forest of middle Kinabatangan during your boat transfer to Sukau Rainforest Lodge — act two of your Borneo river chapter. Later in the afternoon, as the temperature eases and the animals grow active, cruise along the Kinabatangan. Cross your fingers for wild orangutan, pygmy elephant, rhinoceros hornbill, proboscis monkey, and estuarine crocodile. Dinner on Melapi’s terrace is served with water views. After dark, search for bioluminescent mushrooms while chorused by a cacophony of jungle night sounds.
6
Kinabatangan River
Journey to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake. Calmer than the Kinabatangan River, oxbow lakes are nutrient-rich, safe havens for birds and mammals. Wildlife favors the quiet margins, where the forest meets the water, and the soft light makes for the type of sightings that reward an early start. Take breakfast at the lodge, followed by a naturalist-guided amble along the Hornbill Boardwalk. The middle of the day is yours. Your final evening boat safari in Kinabatangan explores whichever channel or species you haven’t yet scouted.
7
Danum Valley Conservation Area
Transfer by road to Borneo Rainforest Lodge, buried deep in the Danum Valley. This ancient forest was formed while dinosaurs still walked the Earth. Today, it’s a holdout refuge for 300+ bird species, orangutans, sun bears, clouded leopards, and pygmy elephants. Some 30 habituated orangutans make their home in the forest that surrounds the lodge, so you needn't walk far to encounter one — just some luck. Settle in, then take your first guided walk inside the shadowy lowland dipterocarp jungle. After dinner, follow your guide on foot as they sweep the darkness with a spotlight, hoping to catch the glowing retinas of a civet, loris, tarsier, or cat.

After breakfast, trek to Coffin Cliff, an ancient Kadazandusun burial site where hollowed-log coffins rest in the rock face. Then, cool off with a jungle swim in a spring-fed rock pool. Lunch is a private table set up in a secluded spot in the rainforest. This afternoon, choose your adventure: a canopy walk above the forest floor, a five-mile river float, or tree climbing. After dinner, a guided night walk is a riddle. What made that noise? What do those eyes belong to?

Danum Valley Conservation Area
Rise early to experience the forest draped in steaming morning mist before the sun burns it off. Your specialist guide picks out specific calls amid the birdsong and squints to see what’s making the branches quake. After lunch, you might hike along the Segama River as it cuts through virgin forest or attend a talk given by a resident environmental expert at Danum Valley Field Centre. Dinner is served on a lofty terrace (try the fragrant laksa), and a pitch-black night walk is dessert.
10
Kota Kinabalu
Wake to the call of gibbons for the last time. Lie in for a lazy morning or squeeze in one final ethereal forest walk. Mid-morning, you’re transferred by road to Lahad Datu Airport. Part ways with your private guide, now a friend, then board a short flight to Kota Kinabalu. Trade Sabah’s deep green interior for the sunlit coast at Shangri-La Tanjung Aru. A lepa-lepa cocktail at Sunset Bar overlooking the South China Sea is a fitting send-off.
