Abel Tasman sits at the apex of a remarkable concentration of protected wilderness. Nelson Lakes National Park to the south and Kahurangi National Park to the west extend the region's wild credentials well beyond the coastline, and with most lodges situated outside the park boundaries, day-tripping between all three is quite easy.

Nelson deserves more than a passing glance on the way to the park. One of New Zealand's sunniest cities, it has a genuinely creative and unique character. Museums, galleries, craft breweries, and quaint restaurants fill a compact and walkable center. The coastal towns between Nelson and Abel Tasman are charming artist communities in their own right, and the drive itself is worth slowing down for.
