Why visit Southern Madagascar?

Isalo National Park's vast rolling plains and dramatic sandstone formations, cut by deep canyons and eroded into extraordinary shapes over millennia, make it one of Madagascar's most visually striking destinations. Sacred to the Bara tribe, whose ancestors have used caves in the canyon walls as burial sites for hundreds of years, the park carries a weight of history alongside its wildlife. Ring-Tailed Lemurs, Sifakas, Brown Lemurs, 80 bird species (including the rare Benson’s Rock-Thrush, the Knob-Billed Duck, and the Crested Ibis), and 35 reptile species all share this sweeping, cinematic terrain.

The community-managed Ifotaka Forest Reserve protects 85 square miles of spiny and gallery forest in the remote deep south. Walk among octopus trees in the early morning light, explore sacred forests where 500-year-old baobabs stand alongside the ancestral tombs of the Antandroy tribe, and seek out five lemur species including the striking Verreaux's Sifaka. Very few tourists venture here and it is incredibly rewarding to be off the beaten track, experiencing the authentic and wild Madagascar that enchanted early explorers.

The south of Madagascar also offers unique cultural encounters. The Mandrare River Camp organizes visits to local markets, schools, and clinics. Nearby there is a local version of the ‘Avenue of the Baobabs’ where sundowners are served, followed by traditional dance performances from the village and accompanied by singing and live music under an ink-dark southern sky.
