Botswana's Chobe National Park and the Savute area are renowned for great herds of elephant that come to drink and play along the sandy riverbanks of the Chobe River. Elephants aside, the game viewing in Chobe is excellent, with a wide variety of animals and birds. Our favorite camp along the Chobe River is Chobe Game Lodge, or, for something more unique, try the Chobe Princess houseboat.

Easily accessible from Victoria Falls and Livingstone, this park is Botswana’s busiest destination. During peak season it can get quite crowded, in part, due to its accessibility from the Falls as a day trip. Also, given Botswana’s dedication to a high-cost/low-density tourism model, the National Parks and public campgrounds offer the most affordable taste of the country’s wildlife.

The Chobe River, near Kasane, is the only place in Botswana where puku are found, often in the company of lechwe and impala.

Savute, a more remote area of Chobe, is popular for spotting Botswana’s largest predators. The famed Savute Marsh is fertile hunting grounds for its fierce lion prides who have a particular knack for taking down buffalo and elephant.
