Is Republic of the Congo the right destination for you?

Congo travel is best suited to active, adventurous, and intrepid travelers drawn to remote, emerging destinations. This is not a classic savannah safari or a polished five-star experience, but an immersive rainforest journey — bugs and all. Expect to explore predominantly on foot, as gorilla trekking, river crossings, wildlife-rich bais, kayaking, and guided night walks define the experience. If you can stand to get your hands a little dirty, the Congo won’t disappoint.

What to expect on a Republic of the Congo luxury safari

Every Extraordinary Journey is bespoke, deeply personal, and designed to uncover the unexpected beauty that makes a destination come alive

Memorable accommodations

Luxury here is intimate and wilderness-first: small, expertly run forest camps in and around Odzala-Kokoua that prioritize extraordinary locations, guiding, and thoughtful comfort in a truly remote setting. Expect stylish but unfussy lodges or tented suites, a strong sense of adventure, and the understanding that the real luxury lies as much in where you are as in what surrounds you.

Carefully considered wilderness

The Republic of the Congo’s greatest draw is its untamed, off-the-radar wilderness — vast protected rainforests threaded by rivers such as the Sangha and Mambili, with Odzala-Kokoua National Park as its defining landscape. Tourism here remains in its infancy, meaning you’ll share the forest with very few other travelers. Each trek or river journey feels like an expedition, not a well-worn circuit.

Expert guides

Safaris in the Congo are led by highly skilled forest specialists who navigate on foot and by water, reading spoor, calls, and subtle movement in a landscape where wildlife is heard as often as it is seen. Their deep primate expertise and steady confidence are essential for gorilla tracking and for interpreting the subtle clues of an intricate rainforest ecosystem that surrounds you.

What is the best time to visit Republic of the Congo?

Located just north of the equator, Odzala’s climate remains fairly consistent year-round: hot and humid. The year alternates between two dry and two rainy seasons.

The dry periods, from November to February and June to August, are generally cooler and less humid, making them our preferred travel windows. That said, rainfall can still occur and conditions remain variable even during the drier months.

The rainy seasons, from March to May and September to October, bring higher humidity and warmer temperatures. Tropical downpours are often balanced by stretches of bright blue skies, creating dramatic light and exceptional conditions for photographers.

Where to go in the Republic of the Congo

Pair the wild, gorilla-rich forests of Odzala with the vibrant riverfront energy and culture of Brazzaville

Odzala-Kokoua National Park

Odzala-Kokoua National Park (often referred to simply as Odzala) spans 3.36 million acres in northwestern Congo. Remote and firmly off the tourist radar, it is one of Africa’s oldest protected areas and critical habitat for western lowland gorillas and African forest elephants. Ongoing research and conservation efforts are essential here, supporting species that have faced years of poaching and habitat loss. We’re drawn to Odzala not only for its extraordinary wildlife and true off-the-grid adventure, but also for the conservation-driven camps we partner with—each deeply committed to sustainable tourism and responsible gorilla trekking.
