Johannesburg is South Africa’s economic capital, largest city, and home to OR Tambo International Airport, a regional hub for Southern Africa. For many travelers, Johannesburg serves only as a logistical overnight at some stage of their trip, but for those who want to explore the city for a few nights, there are a range of activities available. The Apartheid Museum is an excellent stop if you have only an afternoon or a day to explore the city. Coupled with a tour of Soweto township or Constitution Hill, you’ll depart with a deeper appreciation and context for the rest of your journey through South Africa.
Johannesburg isn’t only about the past, however, quite the opposite. Spend a day with Jo Buitendach and you’ll come to see the city as the epicenter for the hip and artistic capital it’s becoming. From street graffiti to the fine art galleries of the Keyes Art Mile and the food stalls of the Neighbourgoods Market to fine-dining fare, Johannesburg has both the flair and flavor to rival many world capitals.
The posh suburbs of Rosebank and Sandton are home to our favorite high-end boutique hotels. We recommend getting away from the airport if you have more than a quick overnight. If not, the Intercontinental is steps from the international arrivals terminal.

The Saxon Hotel, in Johannesburg, is an outstanding five-star property in the city’s most exclusive suburb. Its greatest claim to fame is that it was the private mansion of the white industrialist who invited Nelson Mandela to live with him upon his release from prison, and it was here that much of Long Road to […]
The Peech Hotel is an eco-chic boutique property in the pleasant Johannesburg suburb of Melrose, 10 minute’s drive from Sandton, the shopping hub of Johannesburg, and 5 minute’s from Rosebank, with its lovely craft market and nice restaurants. The hotel has lush gardens and a pool. The restaurant serves quality meals in a casual environment, and […]
Fairlawns Hotel, Only thirty minutes from the Johannesburg OR Tambo Airport, and a short distance from the Gautrain, Fairlawns is perfect for an overnight stop. A hotel vehicle will collect you from the train on arrival. Elegant individually decorated rooms (some quirky touches) offer scenic views over the gardens. The property feels like a traditional […]
The hotel is an old classic that has been reopened with extraordinary levels of service.
The Residence is in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, within easy distance of shopping, entertainment, and restaurants. It is an upmarket owner-managed hotel created by joining two large homes. The result is a small hotel with a very unique feel to it. Each room is unique and most have access to a balcony with a […]
The InterContinental Johannesburg is a perfect stopover when arriving or departing Johannesburg. It is conveniently located and an easy walk across the street from the International Terminal. We love the spa for a rejuvenating treatment after a long flight, and the hotel facilities, such as the gym and indoor heated pool, are added extras. The […]
