Johannesburg

Johannesburg is South Africa’s economic capital, largest city, and home to OR Tambo International Airport, a regional hub for Southern Africa. For many travelers, Johannesburg serves only as a logistical overnight at some stage of their trip, but for those who want to explore the city for a few nights, there are a range of activities available. The Apartheid Museum is an excellent stop if you have only an afternoon or a day to explore the city. Coupled with a tour of Soweto township or Constitution Hill, you’ll depart with a deeper appreciation and context for the rest of your journey through South Africa.

Johannesburg isn’t only about the past, however, quite the opposite. Spend a day with Jo Buitendach and you’ll come to see the city as the epicenter for the hip and artistic capital it’s becoming. From street graffiti to the fine art galleries of the Keyes Art Mile and the food stalls of the Neighbourgoods Market to fine-dining fare, Johannesburg has both the flair and flavor to rival many world capitals.

The posh suburbs of Rosebank and Sandton are home to our favorite high-end boutique hotels. We recommend getting away from the airport if you have more than a quick overnight. If not, the Intercontinental is steps from the international arrivals terminal.
