Luxury Vang Vieng Travel
Once a backpacker haven, this scenic town on the banks of the Nam Song, or Song River, has reimagined itself as Laos’ outdoor adventure epicenter. The natural wonderland is marked by towering limestone karst peaks brimming with hiking trails and caves that await exploration, including the steep hike up to Dok Ngern, or the Silver Flower Cave, which is carved with hidden corridors filled with stalagmites and stalactites.
Float down the Song in an inner tube or paddle down the waterway in a kayak to reach Tham None, one of the largest caves in the region that served as a rescue shelter during the second Indochina War and is now home to a family of bats and the ‘Magic Stone’ of Vang Vieng. In the countryside, embark on a guided cycling tour that takes you along green rice terraces, past red cliffs, and ends with a dip in the area’s glassy emerald lagoons. Afterward, decompress at the charming Riverside Boutique Hotel.
To learn about the culture of the Hmong ethnic minority group, you’ll head north to visit the village of Ban Pha Thao, and from there you’ll visit a Khmu village. Here, you’ll meet with a local knifesmith to learn about his craft and share a traditional Khmu lunch with a local family in their garden. The family also shares insights into their local animist spiritual traditions and the importance of agriculture in the region. Trying the local rice wine, or ‘Lao Hai’, is a highlight.
