Phobjikha Valley Luxury Travel
The Phobjikha Valley is a postcard-pretty valley two-and-a-half-hours southeast of Punakha. Commonly referred to as Gangtey, this scenic spot features a broad, flat valley floor cradled by conifer-blanketed slopes. Nature reigns supreme here, but not by happenstance.
Committed to conservation, the valley floor is completely undeveloped—when Phobjikha was modernized, electricity was buried underground to avoid disturbing the natural environment—making Gangtey a refuge for wildlife. Bears, deer, boar, and foxes wander the valley’s tranquil forests and meadows, and horses cross babbling streams. The misty wetlands also attract majestic and vulnerable black-neck cranes. Each fall, the birds depart the Tibetan Plateau, arriving in Bhutan where they remain until early spring. (Generally, November through March.)
Reverence for cranes is palpable, and you don’t need to be a dedicated birder to appreciate them. Their arrival is hugely anticipated, as is their departure. Before leaving, they circle Gangtey Monastery three times in a clockwise direction (an auspicious number and direction in Buddhism), earning them the moniker “God’s Bird.” The apex of avian celebration takes place on November 11 during the annual Black Neck Crane Festival, with festivities set at the Gangtey Monastery. It’s a special opportunity for visitors to admire crane-inspired attire and performances—but you’ll need to book a year in advance—the festival is popularly attended.

Things to Do in the Phobjikha Valley
The Phobjikha Valley offers nature lovers one of the country’s most scenic and effortless trails: the one-and-a-half-hour Gangtey Nature Trail. The path winds through the valley, traverses wetlands on a boardwalk, dips into pine forests, passes prayer flag-covered hills, and crosses meandering streams. Deepen your connection to the valley’s culture by inviting a local monk to join you on your hike or take a meditative pause at the fourteenth-century Khewang Lhakhang. If you prefer to adventure at a faster pace, saddle up for some trail riding or road biking.
Visit Gangtey Goempa (Monastery), exploring the spiritual complex with an expert guide. Meet the young minds undertaking their journey to become Nyingma monks, one of four schools of Tibetan Buddhism, and what it takes to enter the profession. Gangtey Goempa is also notable for being the seat of the Pema Lingpa Terton tradition (1450–1521). A Bhutanese saint and sidda, Pema Lingpa was an influential figure in Nyingma Buddhism, known as the “The Great Treasure Finder.”
A bountiful valley, Gangtey is reputed for its organic farms and produce, making it an especially good destination for dining. (Perhaps the best in Bhutan.) Share a memorable meal with a Bhutanese family at their farm home or dine al fresco, during a “woodshed dining” experience where chef-prepared cuisine served is served beneath a canopy of towering trees in the fresh mountain air.
Where to Stay in Gangtey
The Phobjikha Valley delivers luxury lodge options in spades. The 12-suite Gangtey Lodge, with its hillside perch, marries traditional Bhutanese architecture with farmhouse aesthetics and modern amenities. (It’s an Extraordinary Journeys favorite.)
Standing sentry over the silent valley, Six Senses Gangtey is a handsome timber-stone-and-glass mountain sanctuary. The eight-suite Amankora Gangtey Lodge sits on a forested knoll, blessed with views of the valley floor and the Gangtey Monastery.
If you’re pressed for time and want to add Gangtey to your luxury Bhutan itinerary, consider transferring via helicopter.
