An intrepid adventure to the Amazon Rainforest and a string of natural wonders along Brazil's remote northeast coast
Embark on a truly unforgettable journey in northern Brazil, visiting some of the country’s most pristine and remote tracts of unspoiled wilderness. Absent a cell signal, you’ll tune into bird chorus, live by the rise and fall of tides, and lose yourself in Brazil’s most sublime—and contrasting—landscapes. Squeeze the juice from every epic day, whether viewing manta rays flit among corals through the viewfinder of a mask and snorkel, during a thrilling kite surfing lesson, or while swimming in the crystalline pool of a sand dune.
You’ll start in the Brazilian Amazon, exploring the perspiring rainforest on jungle hikes and boat rides, keeping an eye out for wildlife such as pink river dolphins. Next, point your compass to Brazil’s remote Northeast Coast. Traverse the undulating quartz sand dunes of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park and swim in the crystal-clear rainwater lagoons. Continue to Jericoacoara, a charming, coastal outpost known for its laid-back village vibes and kitesurfing culture. Conclude your trip on Fernando de Noronha, a tropical island paradise with pristine beaches and world-class snorkeling and scuba diving. Encounter all manner of marine life, from dolphins to sea turtles to lemon sharks, that take refuge in this protected eco-sanctuary.

Epic Northern Brazil Trip Highlights
- Arrive in Brazil via any major international airport (Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, or Brasilia) and then fly onward to Manaus, the capital of Amazonas and gateway to the Brazilian Amazon. Catch a restorative night of sleep at Villa Amazonia, centrally located in the city’s historic center.
- The next day, venture into the “lungs of the Earth”—the incomparable Amazon Rainforest. Make a treehouse-esque luxury suite at Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge your base for adventure. Pass splendid days exploring the thick-knit forest on guided walks, cruise the river archipelago while keeping watch for pink dolphins, and paddle caboclo canoes through flooded jungle. You’ll meet Indigenous groups who call this biodiverse hotspot home, and sample Amazon cuisine that incorporates foraged endemic flora.
- Fly from Manaus to Sao Luis, then transfer to Atins, your first introduction to the Northeast Coast’s land’s-end and off-grid ethos. You’ll slumber at rustic-luxe La Ferme de Georges and then dedicate the next day to exploring the dunescape of Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Hike or ATV through the sublime landscape, go sandboarding, or take an optional scenic flight. If you’re visiting between June and September, take a dip in the gin-clear lagoons that form in the dunes’ depressions. Lençóis Maranhenses's mesmerizing, stark landscape is a jarring contrast to the lush, teeming-with-life Amazon.
- From Atins, make your way to Jericoacoara, a laid-back coastal village buried within a national park. Bohemian to its core, Jeri’s roads are “paved” with sand and the village center is car-free. Gorgeous strands of beach exert a gravitational pull, attracting kitesurfers and windsurfers.
- Spend your days in Jeri outdoors, exploring the area's shifting dunes and freshwater lagoons on day trips—they're all just a dune buggy ride away. Don’t miss the opportunity to try your hand at kitesurfing during an approachable, expert-led lesson. Catch sundown from atop Sunset Dune and after dark, look up to admire a star-splashed sky courtesy of the area’s lack of light pollution.
- The last leg of your trip unfurls on a secretive island 220 miles adrift from the Brazilian coast. The archipelago of Fernando de Noronha is actually the visible crown of a submerged volcano. Fiercely protected and having installed a daily visitor limit, 70% of the island chain is designated a marine national park. The waters here teem with marine life including dolphins, turtles, sharks, coral, and tropical fish. Don a mask for world-class scuba diving or snorkeling, go kayaking, surfing, and explore the craggy coast by boat. On land, endemic wildlife and a network of trails entice hikers to lace up their boots. Explore hidden beaches with unique rock formations, caves, and natural pools, and venture to scenic viewpoints.
- Transfer to Fortaleza to connect to an international airport (Rio, São Paulo, or Brasilia) for your flight home or the next leg of your South American adventure.
