Southern Kalahari

The Kalahari Desert is a semi-arid, sandy savannah covering much of Botswana, parts of Namibia and South Africa. Despite its aridity, the Kalahari supports a wide variety of flora and fauna including brown hyenas, lions, meerkats, giraffes, warthogs, jackals, several species of antelope, and many species of birds and reptiles.

Tswalu Private Kalahari Game Reserve is our favorite area in South Africa’s Kalahari. The reserve is enormous, almost a quarter of a million acres with only two properties. The downside of its remoteness is that it is expensive to get to, so we recommend travelers stay 4-5 days. There is plenty to do; everything from game drives, horseback riding, black rhino tracking, visits to the ancient Bushmen etchings and meerkats! Tswalu’s two properties, Motse and Tarkuni, are both small, stunning, luxury properties.
