Is this the ultimate safari destination?
When travelers think of Kenya, they see the shimmering beauty of Africa in all its glory. They see a lion pride, sunning themselves on rolling golden plains, giraffe elegantly dining from swaying trees, and wildebeest, awesome and uncountable, spread out across the savannah. They see the Maasai, resplendent in red and black, sharing their rich culture. It has a big bill to live up to—and it never, ever disappoints. If anything, I think people are surprised by how much more there is to Kenya. Yes, you have the prolific game viewing of the Maasai Mara, one of the world’s great nature reserves. But you also get to see remarkable conservation work firsthand, and you can experience the wildlife in so many different ways at any time of the year.

Want to try a different kind of safari?
Think safari, and your mind naturally conjures images of Africa. Of a lioness, poised and sleek, making her way through tall, golden grass. A group of elephants grazing together, totally oblivious to your presence. But while we love a traditional safari, this kind of experience is just the beginning. In Swahili, the word safari means “journey”—and that’s exactly how we see a safari.

Lara just got back from Zambia
During my recent trip in Zambia, one morning I awoke to find a long grey trunk snuffling around six feet from my bed. It belonged to a very curious elephant. He had been feeding from a tree next to my tent and obviously saw something he liked in my bathroom. After a few moments of rummaging, he changed his mind—toiletries don’t make for great elephant food, it turns out—and returned to his tree. That’s what I love about Zambia, it is totally unscripted and unpredictable.

Abby just got back from Botswana
What really hit me about Botswana was its wildness. I felt like I was in the middle of nowhere, completely immersed in nature. On my first day, a dazzle of zebra crashed out of the bush right in front of our truck, totally oblivious to our presence. Then, a family of warthogs decided to set up camp on the landing strip—we had to clear them off so we could fly. It’s these kinds of experiences that sum up Botswana: wildlife is everywhere. It’s wild and untouched.

Jamie just got back from Peru…
For some reason, I never thought of Peru as a hiking destination until I visited the Sacred Valley. That’s when I realized—it isn’t just a hiking destination; it might be one of the best in the world. Route after route of sweeping mountains. Tiny towns steeped in tradition, where women weave colorful shawls the way they have for centuries.
