Luxury Vietnam: From the Mountains to the Sea Trip Highlights

  • Begin your journey through Vietnam in the vibrant city of Hanoi, where your personal escort will assist you through customs and visa procedures. Your guide and driver will welcome you and bring you to your hotel, Capella Hanoi. Set on a quiet boulevard on the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake—a lake and greenspace in the heart of the city—this hotel is an elegant ode to Hanoi’s opera culture, situated just moments from the Hanoi Opera House and boasting exquisite suites and a Michelin-starred restaurant.
  • Spend a day experiencing Hanoi like a local. Rise to greet the day with a walk around Hoan Kiem Lake to observe morning tai chi, then get your caffeine fix with a delicious egg coffee—unique to the north—and sample bánh mì, Vietnam’s beloved baguette sandwich. Next, venture into the fray of Hanoi’s Old Quarter to learn about Indochine architecture and Vietnam War history then break for a bowl of bún chả for lunch. End your day with a visit to Hanoi’s railway tracks, a unique part of the city where homes sit just a few nerve-wracking feet from the tracks. Close out the day with a Bia Hoi (fresh brewed local draft beer) at a low table on the sidewalk, a quintessential Hanoi experience.
  • Head into one of Hanoi’s residential neighborhoods to meet a former fighter pilot and here his inspiring story over tea in his home. As you pour over old photographs, books, and testimonials together, he shares his wartime experience as one of only 120 fighter pilots in the Vietnam War. His captivating and heartening story spans the post-war period, too, when against all odds he reunited with former adversaries to form friendships that exemplify reconciliation and compassion. This is a truly unique, heartfelt opportunity to learn about the history of the Vietnam War from the perspective of someone who lived it.
  • Get a masterclass in Hanoi’s culture, history, and fine arts on a tour with an esteemed local expert. You’ll start the day meeting your guide in a charming art cafe and then make your way to the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, housed in a former French convent. Explore the evolution of Vietnamese art, including works from the colonial period, wartime sketches, striking lacquer works commissioned by the government, and modern art styles. Learn about the essential role of artists during Vietnam’s resistance, revolution, and reconstruction periods. After lunch, you’ll wander through the 11th-century Temple of Literature, which served as the country’s first university, educating members of the elite, the royal court, and government officials.
  • En route to Mai Chau in the country’s northern reaches, you’ll stop for a kayaking adventure at a lake that’s off most people’s radar. Paddle out onto the mirrored surface surrounded by the tranquility of forested hills and terraced green rice fields. Enjoy lunch in a local home afterwards before continuing on to Avana Retreat, a stunning haven in the mountains outside of Mai Chau. The region is renowned for its trekking, but there’s plenty of serenity to be found too: organic food and traditional Vietnamese remedies, all enjoyed in an Edenic setting where the only noise is murmuring springs and birdsong.
  • Venture out into the emerald mountains that surround Avana Retreat on a day trek with jaw-dropping views. Climb through the forest to reach a mountaintop looking out over villages in the valley below. Follow narrow dirt trails that carve through cassava fields, bamboo groves, and rice fields and end at remote villages. Visit a local house in one of these small villages to learn about traditional life and customs before returning to Avana Retreat for a romantic private dinner by a waterfall.
  • A full day trek will bring you into the heart of Mai Chau’s mountains and culture. Pass through meadows dotted with Hmong houses, a local ethnic minority, witnessing life play out in this remote rural region. Trace red dirt roads serenaded by the sound of chiming buffalo bells and enjoy a picnic lunch in this peaceful mountain setting before descending back into the valley. Once you’re back at the resort, ease sore muscles with one of your included daily massages.
  • Trade in the mountains for the ocean in Vinh Hy, where you’ll check into what is arguably the most exquisite property in the country, Amanoi. It might be hard to pull yourself away from this heavenly haven, with expansive villas boasting infinity pools that overlook the sea, clifftop restaurants serving locally inspired gourmet fare, a lakeside spa, and a private sand beach. But ensconced within Nui Chua National Park and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, plenty of outdoor adventures are nearby, too.
  • Get a view of Nui Chua National Park’s dramatic cliffs and mountain ranges from the water on a private scenic boat tour out into Vinh Hy Bay. Swim through gin-clear waters to discover a colorful and biodiverse underwater world that’s home to over 330 different coral species. Before wrapping up the day, stop at a small fishing village to learn about local fishermen’s techniques, traditions, and way of life.
  • While at Amanoi, you’ll also get the opportunity to trek to a Raglai village, a regional ethnic minority, for an unforgettable glimpse into local nature and culture. Explore the village’s traditional mud and straw houses and schools, and learn about the Raglai’s matrilineal culture while observing the rhythms of daily life. As you continue to hike through the forest, stop at locally owned farms studded with fruit trees and vegetable gardens, and get hands-on with harvesting, deepening your connection to this peaceful countryside community.
  • On your last night in Vinh Hy, immerse yourself in the nature, culture, and spirituality of the Cham people during a sacred Cham experience. Begin with a walk into the tranquil jungle at dusk, where a traditional Cham feast of curated dishes that highlight their unique and renowned culinary heritage awaits you. Then, in the depths of the forest a Cham master will lead you in a traditional blessing ceremony, offering a rare look at an ancient sacred ritual.
  • On your final morning, your private driver will transfer you to the Cam Tranh airport, from which you can begin your international journey home or continue on the next leg of your Southeast Asia travel adventure.
