Udaipur
Romantic and elegant, Udaipur is known by many names, including the ‘Venice of the East’ and ‘the City of Lakes’. Built around three interconnected lakes – Lake Pichola, Fateh Sagar Lake and the smaller Swaroop Sagar Lake – and encircled by the hills of the Aravalli mountain range, you can’t help but get caught up in the picturesque scenery. It is home to an array of ancient temples and fairy-tale palaces (many of which have been converted into luxury heritage hotels) and is known as one of Rajasthan’s most beautiful cities.
Showcasing many architectural feats, must-see attractions include the City Palace, the Lake Palace (set on a small island in the middle of Lake Pichola) and the Udaipur Solar Observatory – Asia’s premier solar-gazing site. Take a boat ride as the sun sets and marvel at the glittering lights reflecting off the glassy water. Udaipur is a departure from the dust of the desert, an oasis which has inspired countless artists.
As one of Rajasthan’s largest cities, Udaipur is easily connected by air from New Delhi and Jaipur. It is 6 hours by road to Jodhpur, but with some interesting stops along the way that make the journey part of the destination.
