Addis Ababa is a large, bustling metropolis but also the entry point for travelers to Ethiopia and a major gateway into Africa from the USA. You might be familiar with Ethiopian coffee and there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy a fresh cup in this city. If you’re an early morning riser, grab a fresh cup and head up to Yeka Hill for outstanding views of the city and follow that by exploring 700 year old rock church, Washa Michael or visiting Entoto Maryam Church. Later, you can explore the city’s booming art and fashion scene in museums, shops and even in most hotels there are shops displaying local favorites. If art and fashion aren’t your style, there are plenty of historical museums and churches to keep you busy and learning about the fascinating past of Ethiopian history.

We highly suggest a break for lunch for local injera (a spongy pancake-like bread piled with various meats, vegetables and delicious hot sauces) or one of the many up and coming restaurants in the city. We’ll be sure to tell you our favorites.

Dance the night away at the city’s old central Piazza neighborhood and watch the locals step out in style. Ethiopians are known for their amazing movement and memorable dance styles. End the day at a number of great hotels; Sheraton Addis is one of our favorites tucked away from the bustling city and offering luxury amenities.

Ethiopian Airlines is a massive airline servicing Africa and with Addis Ababa being the center of that hub, you are likely to have a stop over here at some point for any African journey. We highly recommend spending at least two to three nights to learn and see all this city has to offer.
