What's it really like to trek with primates in Africa?

After a trek through the primary and secondary rainforests, sometimes through narrow tracks, other times through wide open fields, with expert gorilla guides who slash through the dense vegetation, or clear through towering bamboo forests as the cicadas and frogs sing you along the way, suddenly, your guide makes a loud call, mimicking a gorilla. The sweat drips off your forehead, your calves burn, and maybe your legs even sting ever-so-slightly from the nettle—but it’s worth it. The trackers who left early in the morning to trek deep in the forest call back—the gorillas are nearby. As you get closer, the guide stops you in your tracks, asks you to put your face mask on and take with you only what you need: your camera and an open heart. “The gorillas are here. Lower your voices and let’s go meet them,” says your guide.

What’s it really like to trek with primates in Africa?

After a trek through the primary and secondary rainforests, sometimes through narrow tracks, other times through wide open fields, with expert gorilla guides who slash through the dense vegetation, or clear through towering bamboo forests as the cicadas and frogs sing you along the way, suddenly, your guide makes a loud call, mimicking a gorilla. The sweat drips off your forehead, your calves burn, and maybe your legs even sting ever-so-slightly from the nettle—but it’s worth it. The trackers who left early in the morning to trek deep in the forest call back—the gorillas are nearby. Lower your voices and let’s go meet them,” says your guide.

Tracking charismatic mountain gorillas is one of the many options in East Africa for following in the footsteps of primates, including elegant golden monkeys in Uganda’s Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park. The chic-looking black and white colobus monkeys in Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park, vocal and unpredictable chimpanzees in Western Uganda’s Kibale Forest National Park and Kyambura Gorge, an underground tropical forest near Queen Elizabeth National Park, as well as in Nyungwe Forest National Park. You can also find Western Lowland Gorillas in The Republic of Congo, inside Odzala-Kokoua National Park.

Based on our personal gorilla trekking experiences, Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda, Odzala-Kokoua National Park in the Republic of Congo, and Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo support sustainable gorilla observation in a safe and protective way. As gorillas strive to survive in our modern day, any time spent with them inside these national parks is an exceptional experience.

There are four different types of gorillas: mountain gorilla, Grauer’s gorilla, western lowland gorilla, and cross river gorilla (only found in Nigeria and Cameroon). Read the blog today as we dive deeply into what the experience is like in each one of these East African nations to help decide which is the right experience for you…

Are you ready for a real adventure in Africa’s Congo Basin? This conservation-focused safari takes you deep into the rainforests of the Republic of Congo to see the incredible forest wildlife (20 per cent of the world’s remaining western lowland gorillas live here) and learn about and contribute to the conservation work being done to preserve it. You’ll visit three camps in Odzala-Kokoua National Park, then take a cruise down the Sangha River into the Central African Republic. Its forests are second in size only to the Amazon and contain the greatest number of mammals, primates, birds, amphibians, fish and swallowtail butterflies in Africa. Engage with renowned primatologists, take part in two gorilla habituation exercises, hike to see wild chimpanzees, and explore unique ecosystems and wildlife on game drives and kayaking expeditions.

This itinerary is for those who want to see a different side of Africa. A boat cruise down the Nile allows you to gaze upon all manner of wildlife—from hippo and crocodiles to rare and elusive birds—after which you’ll trek for gorillas and chimpanzees, both the ultimate in wildlife experiences. This extraordinary Uganda safari will also give you the option of taking part in a gorilla habituation experience, which allows you to spend even longer with these gentle giants (although since they’ve spent less time with humans they are constantly on the move, which is part of the experience). Add overnight stays in show-stopping properties, including Bwindi Lodge, a game drive, and the chance to see one of Africa’s most spectacular waterfalls up close, and you have a trip to Africa unlike any other.
