How hands-on can you get on safari sustainably?
Travel is a force for good when planned with care, and at Extraordinary Journeys, conservation of communities and wildlife is at our core.
We support our many partners in their incredible work to conserve the natural environment, wildlife, and biodiversity. This goes hand-in-hand with uplifting the local communities, by providing employment, healthcare, education, training, and development. When you book a trip with us, it’s sustainable—full stop. Consider us the slow fashion equivalent of travel: ethical, intentional and connections-based.
In celebration of World Wildlife Day, we’re highlighting some of our favorite hands-on, conservation-focused safaris in African destinations where your travel is directly contributing to conservation. Have questions? We’re here to answer them.
What makes a trip romantic?
Mystical forests, rhinos, and Africa’s greatest conservation success story
During this virtual event, we will have an open, engaging conversation about how travel can be a force for good, focused on community and wildlife conservation with Carli Flemmer, and Chloe Flatt from African Parks. We’ll be chatting about Rwanda’s Akagera National Park and its successful rhino translocation (including rhinos rescued from zoos!) and the extensive hiking and birdwatching activities inside Nyungwe Forest National Park (not to mention trekking to see chimpanzees), as well as Zambia’s Kafue National Park’s unique landscapes, and a very special lioness that’s made history in Liuwa Plains.
Thought you could only safari on land? Think again…
In the spirit of World Wetlands Day we’re celebrating two of our favorite spots: Ecuador’s Amazon and Botswana’s Okavango Delta.
The Okavango Delta is one of the largest wetlands in the world. As the annual flood waters spread southward from Angola, they fill the Okavango Delta with pools and lagoons and twisting waterways, creating islands that shelter a myriad of wildlife species. It’s one of the most breathtaking places to view wildlife on earth.
Does conservation thrill you?
On Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at 12:00 PM EST, we invite you to join us for a very special edition of Passports with one of our favorite non-profit conservation organizations: African Parks. During this hour-long webinar, we’ll have an intimate conversation with Carli Flemmer, African Parks Chief Marketing Officer, and Chloe Flatt, African Parks Special Projects Manager in Rwanda’s Akagera National Park and Nyungwe Forest National Park.
Where are you traveling in 2023?
If 2022 was the year of slowly easing our way back into travel after its long-awaited return—treading carefully—then 2023 is the year we’re jumping right back in. At Extraordinary Journeys, we believe that the best kind of journey is the one that pushes you—ever-so-slightly—out of your comfort zone. Maybe that’s trying a new cuisine, taking part in an authentic cultural experience, getting up close to unique wildlife, or doing something different than you normally would choose for your holiday.
Happy Holidays From All Of Us At Extraordinary Journeys
Sure, 2022 had its challenges—returning to travel after two years of restrictions, testing, changed and postponed plans, and a serious yearning for adventure by our staff and clients. But for us, 2022 was a year that left us full of gratitude. For travel coming back with more meaning and purpose. For the many new staff […]
What’s it really like to trek with primates in Africa?
After a trek through the primary and secondary rainforests, sometimes through narrow tracks, other times through wide open fields, with expert gorilla guides who slash through the dense vegetation, or clear through towering bamboo forests as the cicadas and frogs sing you along the way, suddenly, your guide makes a loud call, mimicking a gorilla. […]
So, what’s the allure of Kenya’s Maasai Mara?

It is classic savannah: grasslands where animals are plentiful and the landscapes are spectacular. The region is the site of one of the most spectacular animal migrations in the world and home to tremendous concentrations of resident game.
