Sausage Tree Camp

Sausage Tree Camp is a romantic eight-room lodge tucked away along a peaceful channel of Zambia’s Lower Zambezi National Park. Surrounded by lush plains and calm waterways, this secluded property offers an intimate safari experience deeply connected to one of Africa’s greatest rivers. Alongside game drives and walking safaris, canoe tours provide guests with a different kind of immersive wildlife experience. We consider Sausage Tree Camp to be one of the best luxury safari lodges in Zambia.

Children aged eight and older are welcome. Its sister camp, Potato Bush Camp, can accommodate younger children.

What we love about Sausage Tree Camp

Overlooking a quiet artery of the Zambezi, the serene location perfectly reflects the pace of Sausage Tree Camp. As much as it’s a place to encounter Zambian wildlife, it’s a place to unwind and recharge with someone special. We recommend combining Sausage Tree Camp with a few days at Sandibe in the Okavango Delta, and a stop-off in Zimbabwe to view mighty Victoria Falls.

Getting to Sausage Tree Camp

To reach Sausage Tree Camp, guests can fly into one of three airports: Harry Mwanga Nkumbula International Airport (Livingstone), Mfuwe International Airport, or Kenneth Kaunda International Airport (Lusaka) via Johannesburg.

Each airport is connected to the Jeki airstrip, which is located in the middle of the Lower Zambezi National Park. From here, it’s a one-hour game drive to Sausage Tree Camp. We recommend flying to Lusaka via light aircraft. At just 30 minutes, it’s the shortest transfer time—both other airports take around one hour and 45 minutes.

Sausage Tree Camp accommodations

Sausage Tree Camp comprises eight luxury tented suites, with one (Kigelia House) being a two-bedroom suite for groups or families. The tents are decorated in a calming, minimalist style, accented by natural materials such as timber and canvas.

Each of the suites has spectacular river views, with an expansive decking area from which to enjoy the wildlife of the Zambezi. The seven single suites feature a king-size bed overlooking an elegant private pool, while open-air showers allow you to bathe surrounded by the sounds of the wild.

Kigelia House, named after the sausage trees that envelope the lodge, has a generous open-plan living area, which divides two master bedrooms. All rooms are served by a private Muchinda (butler), elevating the luxury experience.

The property is unfenced, with the suites set apart to allow the passage of wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see the occasional elephant wandering through the camp on its way to the river.

Sausage Tree Camp amenities

The main communal deck area offers wide-angle views of the Zambezi; its cushioned seating is the perfect place to relax between activities. As night falls over the water, settle down in the open-air dining space for a romantic meal.

Sausage Tree safari camp Zambia prides itself on its gourmet dining, sourcing the freshest local ingredients for its fusion cuisine. Lunch and dinner can be served in the privacy of your lodge.

An 80-foot lap pool means you don’t have to skip a workout. Wi-Fi is available in the lodge.  All rooms gave power 24 hours a day and hot water. The property has 24-hour security, a laundry service, and an onsite library.

Sausage Tree Camp activities

Game drives: While the tranquil waterways are the main draw of Lower Zambezi National Park, there’s still plenty of dry land to explore within its one-million-acre boundary. Much of the larger game live along the valley floor close to the river, so game drives allow guests to see a range of wildlife in a short amount of time. We love that guests are guaranteed a guide and vehicle; they are available both during the day and at night.

The landscape is strikingly lush, fed by the river and the wetlands close to its banks. Although big game, such as lions and elephants, is common, leopards are the undoubtable highlight. The most elusive member of the Big Five feels right at home in the tall trees of the park.

Canoe along the Chifungulu Channel: Sausage Tree Camp Zambia is one of a handful of operators with permission to offer canoe tours within the park. This rarity makes it all the more special. Viewing the game from this perspective, as you glide along the calm waters of the Zambezi, creates an intimacy unmatched by other safari experiences.

Bush walks: Zambia pioneered the walking safari, and Sausage Tree’s expert guides take great pride in their ability to read the land for signs of wildlife. If you’re lucky, you may just come face-to-face with a lion!

Take a boat cruise up the Zambezi: Watch as pods of hippo wallow in the water and crocodiles sun themselves on the banks during a magical cruise along the river. Finish your day with a gin and tonic and a fiery African sunset.

Catch a Tigerfish: Battle the mighty tigerfish (the piranha’s giant cousin) during a day of spinning or fly fishing. The best time to fish is between September to December when breeding season makes the fish far more formidable.
