Meno a Kwena
Meno A Kwena is a bohemian style tented camp on the banks of the Boteti River with easy access to Makgadikgadi Pans National Park.
This stylish camp, owned and managed by the Dugmore family, has a laid-back, intimate atmosphere of a mobile camp and is a rare example of barefoot luxury in a country more known for luxury offerings. The main areas are open-air tents with canvas with comfortable couches, roofing made from old parachutes, teak boxes, and photos that speak to the Dugmore family’s long history in Botswana. Both the main areas and the tents have views of the Boteti river below and the animals it attracts.
The tents have open air bucket showers where the buckets are stylish copper pots repurposed as shower heads. The tents are small with dim solar lighting but the verandah with its comfortable day bed and peaceful view doubles the size of your private space.
Mena A Kwena offers guests an interesting Bushman cultural experience, full day game drives in the Makgadikgadi National Park, sundowners, boat cruises and a floating hide.
Prime game-viewing season starting in April and extending through November when one of Africa’s largest migrations of zebra are drawn to the Boteti river in huge numbers. At this time of year incredible volume of game are visible from the camp, just sit and relax and let the animals come to you! The Boteti River has only started flowing again in the past several years and in the intervening dry years Meno a Kwena played an essential role in preserving this migration by pumping water up from under the dry river bed.
Meno A Kwena is great value for money and ideally suited to visitors who appreciate its laid-back communal atmosphere, barefoot luxury style and want to experience activities that are not offered by camps in the prime game-viewing areas of northern Botswana. We feel two nights at Meno A Kwena is enough, although a 3-night stay offers the opportunity for a sleep out in the salt pans.
