Thornybush Game Lodge
Thornybush Game Lodge is adjacent to the Kruger National Park, in the private Thornybush concession. This lodge is one of the Thornybush Collection properties whose portfolio offers excellent value for money and some well-priced mid-range options for those with budget constraints.
One of the down sides to Thornybush is that the reserve is fairly small at just under 5000 acres with no access to the greater Kruger for the wildlife (compared to Singita at 45,000 acres and open access to Kruger). In addition, you will see vehicles from other properties on the concession. We find the entrance a bit off-putting as well – it is along a public road with homes and other reserves. Having said that, the game viewing is good year-round with 148 species of mammal and 230 species of bird, and this is a Big 5 area. We have had some excellent wildlife experiences here.
The 18 spacious rooms all have lovely vistas over lush bush or the Monwana River, and the bathrooms are particularly appealing with outdoor showers and a bath with a view. The two luxury/family suites have a lounge area and sleeper couch that can accommodate 2 children under the age of 12. The luxury suites have a private plunge pool.
Thornybush Game Lodge has traditional main areas with decks overlooking the river where some meals are served, a comfortable lounge and a boma where dinners can be enjoyed around a blazing fire under the night skies.
We think this is a great option for those looking for a quality safari at a reasonable price. Thornybush Game Lodge is a family venue and children of all ages are welcome.
