Peponi Hotel

Peponi Hotel, Peponi is a family-run hotel on the island of Lamu. The hotel opened in 1967, and is still run by the Korschens; we love the history and character imbued here, in addition to the personal attention from the owners. It’s a truly local, authentic accommodation that has been at the heart of Shela village for decades. It is also situated between the small but lively downtown scene and stretches of open beach, making it easy to switch from relaxing with the waves to savoring drinks on the rooftop terrace. With 28 beds, it can feel a little large, but the sea-views help open up the space.

Spend your days on the beach or fishing off the coast. As the sun sets, depart on a dhow excursion, or opt to overnight on the water for a unique experience. Snorkeling (perhaps even encountering dolphins) is popular in the area. Alternately, opt stretch your legs with a walk to beach-front Kizingo and enjoy lunch. This 3-hour walking option is a great to escape the bustle of Shela while keeping your feet on dry land.
