Ol Donyo Lodge is located between Amboseli and Tsavo National Parks, adjacent to Chyulu Hills, and is Kenya’s first Relais & Châteaux property. Ol Donyo sits on the Maasai-owned Mbirikani Group Ranch, meaning that it generates revenue for the local community and helps to preserve a key migration corridor for animals between Amboseli and Tsavo.
Being a Relais & Châteaux property and part of Great Plains Conservation’s impressive portfolio (owners of Zafara Camp and Mara Plains), the property meets a high standard for both luxury and sustainability. The suites have private plunge pools and views of Mount Kilimanjaro, as well as the lodge’s waterhole, and there are inter-leading rooms for families. The spacious main areas are open and provide lovely panoramas over the plains. Tasty meals are served outdoors under the African skies.
Although you do find wildlife in the area, Ol Donyo is not best for first-time safari-goers, as you won’t get the large herds and animal diversity you will find in the Maasai Mara or the country’s other major parks.
What Ol Donyo does offer and does very very well is opportunities for authentic cultural interactions with local Maasai. Most of the staff is from the local community and enjoy sharing their customs with guests, providing an insight into the culture.
Other activities include cultural visits, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, and game drives. Spend time relaxing at the pool, enjoying a massage, or sleeping outdoors in one of the star beds.
Ol Donyo is best enjoyed as a relaxing experience, where you can take in the beauty of the setting and gain some insight into local life. We consider it one of the best luxury safari lodges in Kenya.
