Mfuwe Lodge
Mfuwe Lodge is located in the central part of South Luangwa; renowned as a superb region for animals, resulting in it being a busy tourist area. This is the base “logistics” camp for its smaller child camps; Bilimungwe, Chindeni, Chamilandu, Kuyenda, Kapamba and Zungulila; which are situated 2-3 hours into the more remote park areas. We definitely recommend Mfuwe if you arrive on an evening flight and need a place to rest for a night before heading to one of the more remote camps.
Mfuwe’s 18 thatched chalets, nestled amongst ebony and mahogany trees, have private decks overlooking the lagoons that attract masses of hippo, elephant, crocodiles, buffalo, giraffe, and countless other animals and birds. The camp is famous for the parade of elephants that march thru the camp’s reception area every November.
This property is large and feels more like a hotel than a safari camp. It’s perfect for a larger group or for anyone who is looking for a more protected environment. Family rooms are available and Mfuwe is a child-friendly property. The rooms are tastefully decorated but do not give you the sense of being immersed in nature. The lodge has a swimming pool – a must for wallowing in during the summer months. It also has a spa where you can enjoy a revitalizing treatment while gazing out over the lagoon and the resident hippo pod.
Open year-round, the best times to go to Mfuwe are between May and November (the dry season) and September and October (though very hot) because there are particularly good elephant sightings.
