Marataba Trails Lodge
Marataba Trails Lodge, is located within the Marakele National Park, just 3.5 hours drive from Johannesburg. The region is classified as malaria-free. Marataba Trails Lodge is unique for its walking safaris in a Big Five game area. The environment is a fascinating mix of flora and fauna and the walking safaris provide a unique opportunity to see it all up close and personal.
The lodge is situated on the hillside at the bottom of Waterfall Valley. It is surrounded by mountain streams, the source of the Matlabas River (which flows into the mighty Limpopo River, and eventually into the Indian Ocean). All units have spectacular views down into Waterfall Valley, which is particularly magical at sunset!
Morning and afternoon trails depart from the camp each day, with the option of enjoying a full-day hike and picnic in winter. A variety of trails options are available, differing in respect of degree of difficulty and fitness required. Trails range from trekking over the top of the Kransberg range, to traversing through gorges. Regardless of the route, the one thing that remains consistent is the likelihood of encountering wildlife along the way. Evenings are spent in good company around the fire in the boma, learning about bush cooking techniques, local customs and legends.
