Desroches Island Resort
Desroches Island Resort, Desroches is set on its own island in the Indian Ocean, 40 minutes from Mahe by air.
Desroches’ villas are beautiful with décor that is light and airy and the bathrooms are something out of a dream. The toilet, sink, shower and bathtub area is covered but open air with twin rain showers at the back. The bedroom opens up to a deck with direct access to the beach via a small private garden area. Although the villas are lined up next to one another, we found there was never anyone else on the beach-even to watch the sunset. There are more than 8 miles of beach on the island so aside from the perk of having your own private beach, the quantity is important in avoiding the beaches affected by washed up turtle grass on any particular day. The situation changes daily (it can even be vastly different in the morning vs. evening) with the current and tides but there is more than enough powdery white sand and turquoise water to go around.
Descroches is one of the larger private islands in the Seychelles and you are encouraged you to get on your bike and explore (you can also call a buggy if you don’t want to bike); there is an indigenous forest and giant and baby tortoise sanctuaries. You can snorkel and kayak right off the beach or head out on fishing, snorkeling and diving excursions. With all these excursions in addition to time spent doing nothing (or pampering yourself at the spa), you can comfortably spend a week here.
The service at Desroches is truly fabulous, the staff exude a “there are only solutions here, no problems” mindset and go out of their way to make your experience the best it can be. The food exceeded our already high expectations with 3 course meals for lunch and dinner.
Compared to North Island or Fregate, Descroches is larger and more feels a bit more like a resort, but it also comes with a lower price tag. Don’t get us wrong, Descroches is a 5 star luxury property. At same time, it has a fun, active and social vibe. While North Island and Fregate are ideal for those seeking privacy, Desroches will give you plenty of time on your own but also chances to interact with other guests on some shared activities and at the evening cocktail hour.
We love Desroches and highly recommend it for couples and families alike.
