Belmond Copacabana Palace

A century-old landmark, Belmond Copacabana Palace overlooks Rio de Janeiro’s most coveted stretch of beach. Inspired by the art deco flair of the French Riviera and boasting a Rolodex of legendary guests, the Palace firmly occupies grand dame hotel status. Built to celebrate a milestone occasion (the 1922 centennial of Brazilian independence), she continues to host some of the most lavish and extraordinary celebrations.

You might choose Copacabana Palace for its nostalgia, glamor, and people-watching, but unbeatable proximity to the beach, two(!) Michelin-star restaurants, and attentive Belmond hospitality make for a most unforgettable stay in Rio de Janeiro.

Belmond Copacabana Palace Accommodations

Make no mistake, Copacabana Palace is a large hotel. There are 239 rooms and suites, partitioned between the eight-story main building and a 14-floor annex.

The best rooms face the ocean or city, and interior stylings communicate timeless, quiet luxury. Larger, one- and two-bedroom suites (with an added pool view option) offer greater privacy and dedicated lounge spaces. Hardwood accents and pink-and-white marble washrooms give are visual reminders that you’re in Brazil

Upgrading to a Signature Suite grants access to the sixth floor—and its exclusive Black Pool—where dedicated hosts deliver an even more elevated standard of service. Signature suites and villas have oversize balconies, superb views, offer a daily sundowner with canapés, and complimentary laundry service.

Belmond Copacabana Palace Amenities

Guests lounge poolside on sun loungers shaded by white parasols, sipping and snacking on tapas churned out by the Pool Bar’s kitchen. If you’d prefer to bronze atop golden sand, seek out a lounger at Belmond’s private beach service, complete with towels and drinking water. When Copacabana’s waves beckon, attendants will secure your belongings while you swim. Other common areas at Copacabana Palace include the lobby and a handsome wood-clad library where afternoon tea is served.

Work up a sweat at the on-site tennis court or in the well-equipped, air-conditioned fitness center. (There is a sauna and steam room, too.)

The Copacabana Spa offers a full selection of treatments that incorporate botanicals such as guaraná, açaí, and detoxifying Amazon clay.

Following a 30-year hiatus, and a renovation that required more than 600 tradespeople, the curtain at Copacabana Theatre was raised once again in late 2021. Enjoy a performance while admiring the venue’s midcentury glamor, complete with emerald velvet seats and adorned with Brazilian ironwood panels.

Dining at Belmond Copacabana Palace

You’ll certainly want to eat your way through Rio’s neighborhoods, but guests have incredible dining options just steps from their rooms.

Sample fine sakes and inventive Pan-Asian plates at Michelin-starred Mee, where an Omakase (“I trust you”) tasting menu hands the reins over to chef. There are ample vegetarian options.

Dine in at Michelin-starred Ristorante Hotel Cipriani for artfully plated Italian fare assembled from seasonal ingredients. Sample Chef Nello Casesse’s signature dishes (such as raviolini del plin and vitello tonnato), or order off the more playful and exploratory “Tradition-Innovation” menu.

Pérgula brings it all back to Rio for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, where plates are distinctly Carioca in flavor and style. In the evening, the grill fires up to serve prime cuts of flame-licked Brazilian meats.

Whichever dining experience calls to you, Extraordinary Journeys South America specialists can help secure coveted dinner reservations.

Good to Know:

  • All “oceanfront” hotels on Copacabana Beach are, in fact, separated from the sand by Avenida Atlantic.
  • Belmond Copacabana Palace’s chandelier ballrooms attract large weddings and events, which might be a bit too much hubbub for travelers wanting a more laid-back retreat.
  • If you’re looking for a swanky rooftop pool experience in Rio de Janeiro, you won’t find it at Copacabana Palace. (The pool is on the second floor.)
  • Some rooms have no view at all. Your Extraordinary Journeys South America specialist will help navigate you through the room categories.
