Asalem

Experience the Brazilian version of “island time” at Asalem, a laidback, easy-going pousada (Portuguese for “inn”) on the island of Ihla Grande near Rio de Janeiro. A breezy paradise just a short ferry ride from the Costa Verde, or Green Coast, this rainforest-carpeted island is home to some of Brazil’s most beautiful beaches like Lopes Mendes. Yet, the crowds of the mainland are a distant memory, making this an offshore oasis for beachgoers and surfers.

Overlooking the dazzling waters of Abraão Bay on the island’s northeastern shore, the pousada’s eight guestrooms peek out from a mountain-high wall of dense, tropical foliage. In a nod to Brazil’s rich history with modernist architecture, several of the suites feature bold, geometric exteriors, with floor-to-ceiling windows opening from the minimalist interiors onto a bay-view balcony. Others showcase different sides of Brazilian design, like a quaint, stand-alone chalet at the top of the slope which is styled on traditional fisherman homes. At the waterside wooden deck, loungers look out across the water and fishermen pull up each day to sell their fresh catch-of-the-days for dinner. If the mood moves you, step onto the connecting dock to take a kayak or stand-up paddleboard to the nearby beach.

Sandwiched between rainforest and ocean, you’re never far from things to do. Head off on hiking trails through forests teeming with monkeys, tropical birds, and butterflies, or go scuba-diving with turtles. Stroll the streets of Abraão, a fishing village just a short walk from the inn, or set sail on a boat tour of scenic spots. Coming back, grab a spot at the bay-view bar for happy hour caipirinhas made with island-grown fruits before tucking into delicious Brazilian dishes as the sun sets.
